THE training future of Anthony Cummings and his tenure at Randwick’s famous Leilani Lodge is expected to be decided within weeks.

As Racenet revealed in early October, Racing NSW (RNSW) issued the embattled trainer with a “show-cause” notice questioning why he should be permitted to continue holding a trainer’s licence with his business, Rosscarbery Holdings Pty Ltd, in liquidation.

Ahead of making any final determinations, Racenet understands Racing NSW has been awaiting a copy of the creditors report and final submissions from Cummings explaining why he should retain his licence with the regulator.

A report handed down by Sydney financial firm DW Advisory outlined material debts for Rosscarbery Holdings in excess of $2 million, including an outstanding tax debt of $1.3 million along with other creditors totalling $800,000.

A further $155,128 is owed in unpaid superannuation to staff while repayments on loans to the tune of $300,000 in the past year to Anthony Cummings Thoroughbreds also caught the notice of liquidators.

The grave financial plight has put hopes of a training reunion between Anthony Cummings and son Edward on tenterhooks.

Back in 2019, the father and son training duo dissolved their previous nine-year partnership as Edward branched out on his own, setting up base at Hawkesbury.

During that time, Edward enjoyed strong success, headlined by Duais’ 2022 Group 1 Australian Cup triumph.

In recent months, Edward departed his Hawkesbury base and relocated his horses to Randwick in the hope of rekindling his training association with his father at Leilani Lodge, but has been forced to remain on the sidelines.

Advances to have either a training or foreman licence rubber-stamped have so far been rebuffed by Racing NSW, as it works towards reaching a resolution on Cummings’ show-cause notice.

It’s understood Cummings could face Racing NSW officials as early as next week to explain why he should remain a licensed trainer.

The outcome will ultimately decide the future of Leilani Lodge where the 68-year-old has been training since 1991 and from where his famous father Bart trained a number of his Melbourne Cup winners.

The tumultuous period follows a memorable spring carnival for Cummings, who unearthed budding superstar El Castello which raced to victory in the Group 1 Spring Champion Stakes.

Racing NSW and Anthony Cummings were contacted for comment.
