Victorian stayer Warmonger could stamp Sydney Cup aspirations on Saturday at Rosehill Gardens against world class opposition in the Group 1 Tancred Stakes (2400m).
A timely autumn deluge, up to 60mm forecast for the Harbour City, could help the four-year-old gelding, trained by Mick Price and Michael Kent Jr, contend in the strong weight-for-age feature.
“I’m sure these Europeans are fine too, I don’t think it’s too big an advantage for us but he likes it,” Kent Jr said.
Warmonger, who won the Queensland Derby by a record margin on a bottomless and shifty surface last season, placed second in the Listed Randwick City Stakes (2000m) last start.

Winner Alalcance, the Sydney Cup favourite, franked the Randwick City Stakes form last Saturday with a 4.4 length demolition in the Group 3 NE Manion Cup (2400m).
Warmonger has stiffer opposition on Saturday with globetrotting UK raider Dubai Honour, a multiple Group 1 winner in Sydney, with Vauban, Arapaho and Caulfield Cup winner Duke De Sessa also in contention.
“That was as good as he could’ve gone (Warmonger last start), honestly, it was the fastest last 600m he’s ever run,” Kent Jr said.

“Showed the horse is in good form and the track was quite firm but he hit out properly, the form has stood up … (Alalcance) trounced them last start at 2400m.
“This is probably the strongest Tancred in my recent memory, a very, very deep race.
“Dubai Honour, world class horse, Vauban, one of Europe’s best stayers returned with a bang, Duke De Sessa, the Caulfield Cup winner, Arapaho, it’s a very good race.
“We’re very happy with our horse and we’re going to find out if he can match it with these horses at weight-for-age and then we’re really looking forward to the Sydney Cup.”
Favourite Dubai Honour is $3.20 for the Tancred from Vauban ($4), Arapaho ($6.50), Duke De Sessa ($7), River Of Stars ($13) and Warmonger ($17).
