If Ron Quinton’s first starter Bryant turns into another Monton, he’ll be a happy Hall of Famer.

What better day could Quinton have chosen to debut the Ray Gall owned/bred two-year-old than 2024 Festival Stakes day?

Quinton has seen plenty of them – so did Monton.

The son of Catbird participated in four consecutive Festival Stakes starting with a surprise win in 2011.

“It was Sam Clipperton’s first stakes-winner,” Quinton said.

“He was an apprentice at the time and he only picked the ride up on the morning of the race because there was a jockey didn’t turn up and Sam got the ride.”

Monton would go on to complete the Festival/Villiers double, accounting for two of his 10 career wins.

“He was a good old tough bugger and a lovely horse,’’ Quinton said.

“Horses like him are hard to find.’’

As for Bryant, he makes his debut in Saturday’s ATC Ranvet Handicap (1100m), with no great expectations placed upon him for the moment.

“Not now but I think next time around he will be a nice horse,’’ Quinton says.

“He has been nicely educated at the trials but I wouldn’t be expecting a lot from him on Saturday.

“It will just be nice to get a race into him for education purposes for next time around.

“I quite the horse but I wouldn’t think he would be a winning chance (today) but I think he could be okay next preparation.’’

BEST BET

FLOATING (Race 9) is Exhibit A for the proponents of the ‘greys in the wet’ system which might well come into play this wet weekend. A son of (the grey) Puissance De Lune, Floating has a four lengths win, three seconds and a third from his four starts on Heavy tracks. Better still, Floating’s third-up record is four starts for three wins and a second and last but not least, he is unbeaten in both runs at 2000m.

BEST VALUE

MARENARO (Race 6) has failed in eight starts on Good tracks; both wins are on Soft including his September 28 TAB Highway here at Rosehill Gardens where he came from 13th of 17 at the turn and with 58.5kg on board. His next two were on Good 4s so he gets the benefit of the doubt; not that his last one here in the Morning Sun race was bad. He’s a half to Home Affairs but make no mistake, he is a Dundeel looking for 2000m.

PRICE CHECK

ZAPHOD (Race 5) is a lightly-raced Irish-import for Australian Bloodstock and Kris Lees. He won by a long way at Tipperary over 1810m on debut with 60.5kg on a Heavy track. His Australian debut was similar; a Heavy 10 at Scone over 1700m where he put up two-and-a-half lengths on his stablemate Pier Pressure. Had two easy trials into this and has Jason Collett on. Eager to see which direction his $8.50 quote moves if at all.

TRIAL POINTERS

BOMBAY BOOM (Race 1), boom being the optimum word. Two trials, two super impressive wins and importantly, the first one was on a Heavy 8 and in the second, he beat a horse called Offenbach who is pretty handy himself. A $130,000 Classic Yearling, this Matthew Dale-trained colt is out of a Zabeel mare but has a fair bit of precocious speed in his make-up being by Spirit Boom. His third dam is by the Golden Slipper winner John’s Hope; that particular mare being none other than the bonny Kiwi My Gold Hope who won a Railway over there and a Doncaster and All Aged here.

SPIRITCHASER (Race 2) is aiming to become Matthew Dunn’s 39th TAB Highway winner today. The former John Sargent trained High Street resident has been a Murwillumbah local for four runs – a win, a second and a third among them. Like most of the Show A Hearts, she is adept on wet tracks and as for the trials, she won one at Beaudesert on Oct 21 and another at the Gold Coast on November 4. Trivia time; her sire Show A Heart won a Caulfield Guineas and Stradbroke, so did her fifth dam Wiggle, who won her Straddie while still a 2YO!

SECTIONAL STARS

TANNHAUSER (Race 8) is $16 to win the Festival on Saturday and $26 to take out The Ingham at his favourite track (Randwick) two weeks after that. Tannhauser is no Militarize but this Newgate/Waller/Dundeel 4YO has an impressive CV nonetheless; he won the Rough Habit, was the most enormous second in the Carbine Club imaginable and was fifth to King Colorado in the JJ Atkins. Handles the wet – I’d probably go as far to say that he loves it. Just hope they still run him from the wide draw, it might be an advantage.

TOTOKA (Race 3) has raced four times at Rosehill. She ran third in one, fourth in another and was frankly, outclassed in the Magic Night and the Up And Coming. Just for some context (as a fan), the best things I have seen from Totoka were her trial win on a Heavy track at Scone one day and of course that unforgettable ‘off speed’ win at Canterbury on a Sift 7. The Paul Perry trained daughter of Doncaster winner Brutal made up ground when it was not that easily done when beaten a diminishing two and a quarter lengths in the Group 3 Spring Stakes at Newcastle on Hunter day.
