Winning Saturday’s Group 2 $250,000 Missile Stakes (1200m) would go a long way to proving Arctic Glamour might just be a sprinter after all.
The eye-catching grey has featured in some of Australia’s elite miles in the past 12 months but trainers Gerald Ryan and Sterling Alexiou have changed tact this preparation.
“I thought she would run a mile which she hasn’t done,” Ryan said.
“My idea this time was that I am going to train her like a sprinter and keep her sprinting unless she tells us otherwise.
“She has grown, she has lengthened. She is a bigger mare now. We are happy with her.
“The way she looks, I think she has improved off last prep.”

Arctic Glamour only beat one runner home in her final autumn run in the Queen Of The Turf Stakes at the end of a lengthy campaign.
A first up date with the Missile Stakes hadn’t been on the agenda but Ryan has seen enough from Arctic Glamour at home to suggest she’s a winning hope on Saturday.
“I only started thinking about this race a couple of weeks ago,” Ryan said.

• ‘He’s a very nice colt’: Missile favourite Schwarz has Group 1 potential
“It was either trial her earlier this week or run her on Saturday in a $300,000 Group 2 race so take your pick.
“You don’t get paid trialling.
“She is a chance in it and will improve off it.”
Gun jockey Kerrin McEvoy will continue his association with Arctic Glamour ($5.50), who sits behind Schwarz ($2.20) on the second line of betting for the Missile Stakes.

Stablemate Green Shadows ($5) will wear the same blue, black and white silks as Arctic Glamour less than an hour earlier when the gelding lines up behind Deficit ($23) in the Toyota Forklifts Benchmark 78 (1600m).
Green Shadows is coming off a last start win while Ryan is hoping Deficit can turn around his last start effort.
“Green Shadows has a better barrier and he is going to get firmer footing,” he said.
“Deficit was going really good his first two runs and then the other day he raced flat so freshened him up and hopefully we get a better track underneath him.”
The stable could book end the card with Smashing Eagle (race one) and Union Army (race 10).
