Father and son co-trainers Anthony and Sam Freedman have become the latest Victorian operation to join the Sydney training ranks.

Anthony is the third eldest of racing’s famous Freedman brothers and he and Sam join Richard, who trains in partnership with his son Will and Michael, as family trainers with boxes in Sydney.

Anthony pioneered the Freedman brothers’ first foray into Sydney back in 1992 when he opened a stable at Royal Randwick, under Lee Freedman’s licence, and he prepared Bint Marscay to win the 1993 Golden Slipper at Rosehill.

Anthony and Sam Freedman formed their partnership in 2020 and during the past four years they’ve won more than 430 races including two of Australia’s biggest jewels, the Caulfield and Melbourne Cups last year with Without A Fight.

In total they’ve won seven Group 1 races, including the 2023 Canterbury Stakes with Artorius, as well as 57 black-type races.

The Freedmans will set up a Sydney satellite stable of up to 30 boxes at Royal Randwick after a barn became available with Peter Snowden’s decision to downsize his operation.

“I’m delighted to be able to base in Sydney for our owners but especially for the future of my son’s career,” Anthony Freedman said.

“The opportunity to have a stable at Royal Randwick doesn’t come along very often so for an emerging trainer such as Sam it is a great honour.”

The Freedmans Victorian base operates out of 40 new stables at Cranbourne and the Pinecliff complex, a state-of-the-art training centre at Mt Eliza.

They are the latest predominantly Victorian-based operation to join the Sydney ranks.

Last month, Mick Price and Michael Kent Jr were granted 16 boxes at Rosehill while Ciaron Maher operates out of a barn housing 30 horses at Warwick Farm.

Maher describes the Warwick Farm stables as “the nucleus of the NSW operation” which also trains horses at the Bong Bong Private Farm in the Southern Highlands and Bobs Farm at Newcastle.

Australian Turf Club chairman Peter McGauran said the decision by Anthony and Sam Freedman to source a Sydney base is another strong vote of confidence in Australia’s richest racing jurisdiction.

“This is a strong endorsement of Sydney racing to have such a successful family training partnership based at Royal Randwick,” McGauran said.

“Anthony Freedman now in partnership with his son continues the recent trend of Australia’s biggest and most successful stables wanting to make Sydney home.

“The Freedman stable brings the might of some of Australia’s most prominent owners and breeders.”

The Freedmans are expected to have their first runners out of their new base by the end of the year.

Meanwhile, Without A Fight was one of Australia’s three Hong Kong International Races contenders to arrive in the Asian racing epicentre on Tuesday morning.
