Alligator Blood’s potential comeback race revealed … and it’s a Group 1 contest in Sydney

The incredible racing comeback of headline horse Alligator Blood is gathering momentum with a Group 1 Sydney autumn carnival race now pencilled in for his return.

Racenet revealed on January 6 that the Group 1 superstar had switched stables from Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott to Chris Waller and would be set for a stunning return to racing.

Now it can be revealed that connections have been informed that the $1.5m Group 1 All Aged Stakes (1400m) at Randwick on the final day of the Sydney autumn carnival has been circled for a potential comeback.

That will hinge on Alligator Blood continuing to thrive and impress at Waller’s stable which is set to deploy him at the trials next month.

If all goes well, and Alligator Blood resumes in the All Aged Stakes, there would be the possibility of continuing his comeback racing campaign in the Queensland winter racing carnival.

The Sunshine State was the scene of one of Alligator Blood’s greatest triumphs, scoring the 2022 Group 1 Stradbroke Handicap in an imposing triumph in Queensland’s most prestigious race.

Alligator Blood, the seven-time Group 1 winner, suffered a serious pastern injury in January 2024 and it was feared he may have run his last race.

But a lengthy rehabilitation regime – which first started with gentle steps at the Brisbane property of part-owner Jeff Simpson – had paid dividends to the point where it appears as though Alligator Blood will return to the races as an eight-year-old.

Alligator Blood was for a period under the dedicated care of Vision Equine in Queensland and then was at Limitless Lodge in NSW before being sent to Waller.

Owners switched the star horse to Waller as, coming back from a significant injury, they were keen for the veteran galloper to have a change of scenery and try Waller’s training methods.

Scans have shown Alligator Blood’s injury has recovered and there is no scarring or lingering issues.

Alligator Blood, who races in Gerry Harvey’s famous blue and white colours but is also owned by Queenslanders Jeff and Robyn Simpson, was last seen racing in the 2023 Victorian spring carnival.

The gelding has done everything right so far at trackwork for Waller and his workload will slowly intensify over the next few weeks as he prepares to get to the trial stage.

In long-range betting, several corporate betting agencies have Giga Kick and Sunshine in Paris as the leading fancies for the All Aged Stakes which was last year won by Magic Time.
