My Oberon has been specked a big odds to end a frustrating run of near misses over the Randwick mile in the $1m 7 Stakes

The Annabel Neasham and Rob Archibald-trained My Oberon has run of his best races in Australia over the Randwick mile without success but can atone in the $1m 7 Stakes on Saturday.

Smart import My Oberon can end a run of feature Randwick mile near misses in Saturday’s $1 million 7 Stakes (1600m).

The Annabel Neasham and Rob Archibald-trained eight-year-old has only got one win in Australia in his maiden start here in the Group 2 Crystal Mile at The Valley in October 2022.

But My Oberon has done some of his best racing at Royal Randwick since then.

The son Dubawi was a narrow runner-up to Mr Brightside in the 2023 Group 1 Doncaster Mile, fourth in last year’s 7 Stakes and third in the Group 1 King Charles III Stakes last spring.

He has been supported from $51 into $26 to score a much deserved breakthrough in the 7 Stakes where Cox Plate winning hoop Chad Schofield will ride.

My Oberon heads into the run second-up after racing without a lot of luck in a midfield finish in the Group 2 Tramway Stakes.

Pride on the line: ‘How is he not in the 12 best sprinters?’

“I thought his first-up run was good,” Archibald said.

“He was off the scene for a while and up to the mile on Saturday will suit him.

“He gets the blinkers back on and we think he will run well from a nice draw.

“I know he is a big price and probably does have to improve a little bit to be in the mix but he should run well.

“He is probably a run away to be where he was but he’s heading in the right direction.”

Neasham and Archibald’s other Sydney feature runner is another import.

Lightly-raced galloper Star Of India ($71) spent 82 weeks away from the races after suffering a tendon injury in trackwork in the lead up to the 2023 autumn.

He finished back in the pack in his return during this winter and will take another step in his comeback in the Group 3 $250,000 Kingston Town Stakes (2000m).

“Star Of India trialled really well the other day and is improving all the time,” Archibald said.

“He will take a couple of runs to get back to his full fitness but we are pleased with him and obviously whatever he does on Saturday, he will improve on next start.

“I would think he will get back from the gate and run home.”

Leading Caulfield Cup contender Fawkner Park will lead a two-pronged attack for Neasham and Archibald in Saturday’s Group 1 $750,000 Underwood Stakes.

Fawkner Park, an $8 second elect for the Caulfield Cup, is one of the most exciting horses in their stable after putting together a terrific start to 2023 with feature victories in the Listed Albury Cup, Listed Wagga Cup and Group 2 Q22.

Star Sydney rider Tyler Schiller will jet down to Melbourne to pilot Fawkner Park in his first-up assignment where he is a $7.50 chance.

“Fawkner Park is more of the headline horse for us,” Archibald said.

“He’s on that Caulfield Cup path and will have the two runs leading into it.

“He seems to have come back really well and should get a lovely run from the draw.

“It’s the sort of race where you are going to have to be at your very best and he will improve on it but it’s a nice starting point.”

“I think he has taken a lot of confidence out of that Brisbane campaign and he seems in good order but he is going to have to go to another level if he is going to be mixing it with the best. We are confident he can.”

Stablemate Bois D’argent joins Fawkner Park in the Underwood after finishing third behind his stablemate in his last start in the Q22 in June.

The son of Toronado chalked up his maiden Group 1 win in the winter in the Doomben Cup and will be targeted at several majors throughout the Melbourne spring carnival.

He’s a $26 chance to kick off his preparation on the right note.

“Bois D’argent ran really well in the Caulfield Cup last year so we will see how he comes through his first two runs,” Archibald said.

“He is going well and gets a good draw so we will go through the Underwood, the Turnbull and then go from there.”
