News Corp form analyst Gilbert Gardiner looks at the chances of every runner in Saturday’s $2m Group 1 Coolmore Stud Stakes (1200m) at Flemington

1. JACQUINOT (16) – $5

Trainer: Mick Price and Michael Kent Jr

Jockey: Damian Lane 57kg

Ticks every box but the weather. Super in The Everest, beaten 1.6 lengths on an unsuitable sticky surface start prior won the Group 1 Golden Rose at 1400m. Big shout.

2. BEST OF BORDEAUX (17) – $16

Trainer: Kacy Fogden

Jockey: Ben Melham 57kg

Seven-day back-up after placing third – 5.2 lengths off Bella Nipotina – in the Group 1 Manikato Stakes last Saturday. Has wet form but needs to find two lengths on In Secret.

3. SERJARDAN (12) – $21

Trainer: Gary Portelli

Jockey: John Allen 57kg

Nice confidence booster winning the Group 3 Red Anchor Stakes last Saturday at The Valley but looks a place chance only in a crack field.

4. LOFTY STRIKE (5) – $23

Trainer: Julius Sandhu

Jockey: Jamie Mott 57kg

Best outsider by the length of the Flemington straight. Had he raced in the Blue Diamond and won (a couple of ifs there) he’d be a $5 chance in the Coolmore second-up.

5. NETTUNO (10) – $21

Trainer: Tony Gollan

Jockey: Damien Oliver 57kg

Has several lengths to make up on the key players but the Queenslander has earned a crack at the big guns after three solid outings in Sydney.

6. BUENOS NOCHES (15) – $8

Trainer: Matthew Smith

Jockey: Craig Newitt 57kg

Definite winning chance. Half a stride more last start and you could argue he beats subsequent The Everest winner Giga Kick. Gets back and needs luck but savages the line like few others can.

7. GRAND IMPACT (1) – $10

Trainers: Mick Price and Michael Kent Jr

Jockey: Mark Zahra 57kg

Gone from maiden to Group 3 winner in three perfect starts, all on rain-affected tracks. First time against the best of his class but cannot discount.

8. ECONOMICS (14) – $11

Trainer: Annabel Neasham

Jockey: Chad Schofield 57kg

Impressive Flemington jumpout winner last week and prior to that bolted in a Listed race at Rosehill. Should be up in the firing line and hard to run down. Handles all conditions.

9. MERIDIUS (6) – $51

Trainer: Lloyd Kennewell

Jockey: William Buick 57kg

Dropping back in distance but with speed on and the stiff Flemington 1200m straight looks right up his alley. Sneaky place chance.

10. DOULL (4) – $61

Trainers: Anthony and Sam Freedman

Jockey: Jye McNeil 57kg

Way over the odds. Ready to peak third-up and drawn nicely to lead or be handy in the run. Include in trifecta and first four plays.

11. GREAT BARRIER REEF (7) – $101

Trainer: Chris Waller

Jockey: Damien Thornton 57kg

Finished midfield in the Danehill Stakes two starts back at Flemington, expect something similar.

12. CUSTODIAN (3) – $151

Trainers: Anthony and Sam Freedman

Jockey: Brett Prebble 57kg

Prefer in something easier.

13. BEWS (2) – $71

Trainers: Mick Price and Michael Kent Jr

Jockey: Daniel Moor 57kg

Sale maiden winner jumps out nicely but has yet to put it all together on race day. Could be one to pencil in for the autumn.

14. COOLANGATTA (13) – $7.50

Trainers: Ciaron Maher and David Eustace

Jockey: Craig Williams 55kg

Will take plenty of catching but in doing so, sets up the race perfectly for the backmarkers. Can she get a strong 1200m on a wet track at Flemington?

15. IN SECRET (9) – $3.80

Trainer: James Cummings

Jockey: James McDonald 55kg

The trainer/jockey combination is airborne, nine winners from past 21 starters including four Group 1s, and the filly should get every chance from barrier nine. Looks the winner.

16. QUEEN OF THE BALL (8) – $41

Trainer: Michael Freedman

Jockey: Josh Parr 55kg

Nice filly with oodles of speed but a fraction off the real top-liners.

17. C’EST MAGIQUE (11) – $34

Trainer: Grahame Begg

Jockey: Michael Dee 55kg

Sneaky top five chance. Talented filly with loads of upside. Blue Diamond-winning older brother-turned-stallion Written By placed fourth in the 2018 Coolmore Stud Stakes.

GILBERT GARDINER’S SELECTIONS

  1. IN SECRET
  2. BUENOS NOCHES
