Darby Racing’s bargain buy filly Within The Law remain unbeaten with a determined win in the Inglis Nursery at Randwick

Syndicator Scott Darby has a knack of finding diamonds in the rough and has unearthed another in $30,000 yearling Within The Law who recorded her second Inglis feature win at Randwick.

Bjorn Baker’s boom filly Within The Law is becoming a money-making machine after maintaining her unbeaten record at Royal Randwick on Saturday.

Within The Law burst between runners to score an exciting win in the $500,000 Inglis Nursery (1000m).

The Randwick win comes after her debut success in the Inglis Banner at Flemington last month.

Within The Law’s two wins have taken the filly less than 60 seconds each time and have netted her owners just over $590,000 – an incredible return on the $30,000 leading syndicator Scott Darby of Darby Racing needed to secure the filly at the Inglis Classic Sale earlier this year.

The Inglis Nursery finish was as triumph for Darby Racing as they led in the quinella when Within The Law ($3.50), ridden by Jason Collett, scored by a neck from Cobra Club ($21) with Sequista ($9) a half-length away third.

First starter Cantiamo was backed into $3.30 favouritism but after leading for home she faded late to finish sixth.

“Cantiamo didn’t fly out of the barriers, which was costly,” jockey Kerrin McEvoy said.

“She mustered to go through and lead then gave a little kick but was weakening the last little bit because of that early work. She’s a nice filly.”

But all honours belong to Darby and his syndication business after he led in the big-race quinella.

“Within The Law and Cobra Club ($70,000) were two of the cheapest horses in the race and it’s a great thrill to see them run first and second,” Darby said.

“Bjorn (Baker, trainer) has done a great job with the filly. She won her first start in Melbourne and then he set her for this race.

“The plan is for her to go to the ($2 million) Inglis Millennium (1100m, Randwick, February 8) and then give her one lead-up run into the Golden Slipper.”

Within The Law firmed to the fourth line of betting for the $5m Golden Slipper (1200) at Rosehill Gardens on March 22.

But wait, there’s more! If Within The Law does win the Inglis Millennium, then she will be eligible for a $3 million bonus if she can also win the Group 1 $1m Inglis Sires (1400m) at Royal Randwick on April 5.

Baker wasn’t on track at Randwick but his representative Luke Hilton said Within The Law has “done nothing but improve since she came home” from Melbourne.

“That was a really tough win today because she is not very big but showed a lot of heart,” Hilton said.

“I thought she was super tough to beat the boys and push a few out of the road. She was really impressive.

“She’s such an honest filly, handles everything and is just so professional.”

Collett was having his first race ride on Within The Law and admitted he was underwhelmed by the filly’s recent barrier trial effort.

“I came in scratching my head,” Collett said.

“Then I went back through her form, I had a sit on her Tuesday morning and it started making sense.

“I was confident today that I’d be strong late and once I got the split, she really attacked the line.”

Since the Inglis Millennium was introduced in 2009, two winners have trained on to win the Golden Slipper – Mossfun (2014) and She Will Reign (2017), who was also owned by Darby Racing.

Within The Law’s win continued the recent successful run of Darby Syndications which has included their outstanding sprinter Overpass, winner of the Group 3 $2 million Sydney Stakes and Group 1 $1.5m Winterbottom Stakes during the spring carnival.

“Overpass is back from Perth and will have a break now,” Darby said.

“Then we will do it all over again and get him ready for The Quokka and Winterbottom Stakes next year.

“We paid $75,000 for Overpass as a yearling and he has now won $9.7 million prizemoney.”
