BEST BET

Matthew Dunn -trained filly who was placed at Eagle Farm first-up. Go well.

INSIDE MAIL - CANTERBURY

RACE 1

Tempestry is a Savabeel gelding out of a Galileo mare who was a Group 1 runner-up in England and third in the Irish Oaks. The Chris Waller-trained three-year-old was $31 to $51 on debut at Newcastle in a 1500m Maiden on Nov 27. Beaten almost eight lengths but he did run third looking like a horse ready to improve again over more ground. Pretty much ‘ditto’ that for the stablemate Sounds Unusual. Great White Shark has a great draw but is a bit costly.

Bet: Tempestry to win, quinella 3, 8

RACE 2

Tuileries has a bit of a Cox Plate pedigree; her sire, So You Think won two of them, her fourth dam Ruby is the mother of 1987 race winner, Rubiton. As for this filly, she was set aside after a huge run in a really deep midweek Maiden at Warwick Farm on April 1. Trialling well. Maori Chief has placed in all three so far and resumes off a nice trial. Hell To Pay’s three thirds are behind Wanaruah, Codetta and Gerringong.

Bet: Tuileries to win

RACE 3

Mackinaw Peach is a flashy chestnut filly whose finishing positions, and beaten margins, in her three trials are totally misleading. They’ve been rippers, all three. Barring any incident, you would expect to see her camped just off the speed and ready to unload late. Miss Jones is good but the draw is bad. Eager to see what the Snitzel half-sister to Yes Yes Yes can do here, that’s the Waller trained Insinuate who has trialled up suitably well.

Bet: Mackinaw Peach to win

Like Lukey heads to city grade off two impressive country wins. Picture: Bradley Photos

RACE 4

All roads lead to Like Lukey, this very progressive Kris Lees-trained mare who comes to town at the absolute peak of her powers for the absolute perfect race. Speaking of the perfect race, Kirikan has raced at this same track and distance for a win and a third. Got to mark him ‘up’ for the good alley.

Bet: Cosmic Lad each-way or is scratched, Like Lukey each-way

RACE 5

Impulsivity is a Peter Snowden-trained filly by his Galaxy winner, and now top shelf stallion, Russian Revolution. She has a tidy little C.V; two wins and three placings from her eights, and a lot of depth in those races too. Inched out first-up, drawn well and ‘in’ nicely after the 3kg claim. Gerringong’s owners read like a who’s who of Footy card legends; what would a Mick Cronin card be worth now? As for the horse, he’s as fast as the Zip Zip Man.

Bet: Impulsivity to win

RACE 6

Zealously is unbeaten in his two starts since being gelded. He ran 56.47s for the 1000m at Kembla on Cup and won by four lengths eased down. He went to Wyong 18 days later and went 56.15s and won by two lengths eased down again. Barrier 3, 3kg off, on-pace track (usually), he is easy to find and impossible not to like. Vegas Raider is a Saturday class horse. The 2022 Inglis Challenge winner goes well fresh and trailed brilliantly the other day.

Bet: Zealously to win, exacta 8 to beat 5, Daily Double 1st leg (8), 2nd Leg (3)

RACE 7

Unlimited won over ten furlongs, back-to-back, in England when William Haggas had him. He’s had six runs down here for Chris Waller. He was very unlucky one Saturday at Randwick. Fast forward to September 18 and J-Mac got the job done on him here in a 1900m Benchmark 72. Trialled well. Fortune has accepted for other races but keep in mind, he has trialled well. Inquiring Minds was a 1550m first-up winner here. This could end up a very small field after scratchings.

Bet: Unlimited to win

RACE 8

Scorch is an appropriately named son of Hell It’s Hot which makes him the half-brother to In Her Time and close relation to Yes Yes Yes. The Team Hawkes-trained galloper was close to a good thing when he resumed here on November 15. Pulled out plenty when challenged. Time will tell if we go with or without Lancaster Bomber and How Dare You. Both of them genuine threats. Avid trials watchers won’t have missed either of those two very impressive heat wins by Winston Hills who was runner-up in a Canberra maiden to Sunshine In Paris at start number two.

Bet: Scorch to win, Winston Hills each-way
