FRENCH superstar Lazzat is likely to be aimed at the $10 million Golden Eagle after maintaining his unbeaten record with a breakthrough Group 1 win at Deauville on Sunday.
Lazzat dominated an outstanding field of older horses including English July Cup winner Mill Stream to race away with the Prix Maurice De Gheest (1300m).
This was Lazzat’s first test in a Group 1 race but he extended his perfect record to six wins from as many starts with an effortless three length romp.
“It was just amazing and when you have an unbeaten horse and are climbing up the hill step by step and you reach Group 1 level, to win that way is just unbelievable,’’ trainer Jerome Reynier said.
“This horse is pushing all the limits, and it is unbelievable the way he was physically and mentally today, he was so strong, and it gives you so much confidence.”
Reynier then told French media that the Golden Eagle (1500m) at Rosehill Gardens on November 2 was a likely target for his brilliant three-year-old.
“He’s done the seven furlongs at Longchamp really well when winning the Prix Paul de Moussac so he has been entered in the Prix de la Foret,” Reynier said.
“But obviously the prizemoney for the Golden Eagle is unbelievable and that would be a great challenge and we would love to go to Australia with a runner - and he wouldn’t be just any kind of runner. Maybe we will be tempted.”
TAB Fixed Odds price assessors tightened Lazzat’s odds from $26 into $15 for the Golden Eagle behind Doncaster Mile winner Celestial Legend at $3.50.
Reynier admitted the “logistics are quite hard to put in place with two weeks quarantine in Newmarket and two weeks quarantine over there (Australia).”
“If he feels well he will travel OK, he’s very easy to handle and to deal with,’’ Reynier said.
“He doesn’t need much work, he’s just a good horse and a pure champion, I think.’’
Meanwhile, New Zealand’s top four-year-old Crocetti put himself into the Golden Eagle frame when he scored a tough first-up win in the Kerikeri Cup at Ruakaka.
Crocetti, winner at eight of his nine starts including the Group 1 New Zealand 2000 Guineas last season, is also at $15 for the Golden Eagle.
