Hockey fans rejoice, the Herald Sun and Geelong Advertiser have joined forces with Hockey Victoria to livestream weekly matches from the men’s and women’s Premier League in 2021.

And, on top of that, we’ll stream from four of the key state junior tournaments through winter — the country junior champs for U13s, U15s and U17s on May 16, and the junior state champs from multiple venues on July 4.

Featuring six members of current Australian squads, the Premier League is the highest level of competition in Victoria, boasting 16 men’s and 16 women’s teams competing in a 19-round home and away season, the top-eight fighting it out over four weeks for the ultimate prize.

Herald Sun editor Sam Weir said he was delighted hockey had come on board as the masthead’s first key livestream partner.

“It’s an exciting sport and we’re always striving to be innovative and offer more value for our subscribers,” Mr Weir said.

Geelong Advertiser editor Elise Potter agreed, saying streaming was an increasing part of the publisher’s offering: “It’s tremendous we’re under way with hockey,” she said.

Hockey Victoria chief executive Andrew Skillern said the partnership would provide greater exposure to one of the country’s most popular participation sports.

“We couldn’t be more excited to work with the great folks at News Corp and My Sport Live and to broadcast our Game Clothing Premier League live across the country,” Mr Skillern said.

“We are eager to grow the game of Hockey and the sport’s profile through the coverage of our Premier League, Junior State Championships.”

“Expanding the coverage to News Corp platforms will introduce the sport to a wider audience and we are really looking forward to working with them.”
