Ogilvy snares top Vic award

US OPEN golf champion Geoff Ogilvy has been named Victoria's sportsperson of the year.

US OPEN golf champion Geoff Ogilvy has been named Victoria's sportsperson of the year.

His memorable 12 months, which also included the match-play world championship and a rise to No. 7 in the rankings, was recognised at the VicSport annual awards last night.

Distance runner Craig Mottram and cyclist Katie Mactier were named male and female athlete of the year, Mactier for the second year running.

VicSport, short for the Sports Federation of Victoria, is an industry body representing 118 organisations. The AFL is not one.

Ogilvy's parents accepted the award on his behalf while he appeared on a video link from the US. He will return next week to compete in the Australian Open in Sydney.

Olympic sprinter Peter Norman, who died last month, posthumously won the Lord Mayor's award for an outstanding contribution to sport.

Norman, a five-time national champion over 200m, won the silver medal at the 1968 Olympics and then, famously, joined Americans Tommie Smith and John Carlos in their immortal civil-rights protest on the victory dais.

Other award winners included the Phoenix netball team (women's team of the year), the King's Cup rowing crew (men's team) and world and Commonwealth 50m butterfly swimming champion Danni Miatke (junior athlete).

Swimming's Ian Pope was named coach of the year.
