Players from both sides were taken off the pitch and went back to their locker rooms as they drone delay carried on.
After 10 minutes, the drone was cleared and players were called back out of the locker rooms to resume play.
YouTuber Ally Law, a popular prankster, seemingly claimed responsibility for the incident.
“Testing my new drone today over Southampton,” Law tweeted before the game, accompanied by a picture of a drone. “Beautiful day for it!”
After the game, Law retweeted others crediting him.
Ollie Watkins’ 77th minute winner saw Aston Villa take home the victory. But you couldn’t help but feel for struggling Southampton who had two goals disallowed.
The first was a Kyle Walker-Peters tap due to being offside and then James Ward-Prowse was denied in the second-half by VAR drama.
The first incident involved Che Adams scooping up a mouth-watering ball in from Lyanco and scuffing a shot which rolled just towards goal.

Kyle Walker-Peters then snaffled it up to make sure the ball was smashed home, but was offside – although replays actually showed Adams was just offside too.
Aston Villa had their turn as a blistering passing sequence between Leon Bailey to Emiliano Buendia saw the Argentine sting the hands of Gavin Bazunu before Bailey blazed over the rebound.
