Olyroos captain Tommy Deng believes his move to Japanese giants Urawa Red Diamonds is a huge boost to his preparations for “dream come true” Tokyo 2020.

Although Deng, 22, has not played for Victory since November due to injury and Olyroos duty, he’s a first XI player whose exit is a blow, albeit shrewd business considering his contract was expiring at the end of the season.

German defender Tim Hoogland returns for Saturday night’s visit to Perth Glory offsetting the loss of Deng, who arrived in Japan on Friday night.

Deng, who scored two goals in 71 games for Victory, said it was the chance to join Asia’s premier league was too good to pass up.

“Can’t wait to get started in Japan at such a big club, Urawa Red Diamonds. Amazing to be considered as a player for them. Massive club in Japan and very exciting times,” Deng said.

“It’s a great opportunity and I’m very excited. Close to Tokyo. Later on this year the Olympics are there – so it’s worked perfectly.

“I need to knuckle down and work hard. You’ve gotta be ready for the opportunities.”

Deng’s gutsy Olympic qualifying displays were evident, playing out the first two games while coming down with cramp as he entered underdone as players lost up to 3kg per game.

He was gushing with pride after Graham Arnold’s side broke a 12-year hoodoo.

“Like a dream come true. From a young age you watch Olympics and World Cups and you dream of one day playing in front of big crowds. To be there will be very exciting,” he said.

“Being in the Olympic Village, and all experiences that will come, you’ll remember for rest of your life – to be an Olympian will be a great feeling, telling kids, grandkids, family. It’s undescribeable.

“It was challenging at the start, going to Bangkok with no games in my legs – had to work hard, credit to (the coaching staff). They looked after me, towards latter stages I was in really good nick.”

Deng was effusive in his praise of Victory, where he’s been since 2014.

“It’s been an amazing journey. Lots of good memories and good friends at Victory, people I’ll know for the rest of my life,” Deng said.

“Most memorable game was starting debut against City, just my second A-League game. Everything just flowed on from there.

“Sad that I’m leaving but an important step for the next chapter of my career. Victory will always be close to my heart.”
