Socceroo great Tim Cahill’s son Shae suffers blow to football career

Socceroo legend Tim Cahill’s son Shae has hit a major speed bump as he battles to follow in his famous dad’s footsteps.

Shae Cahill, son of Socceroos great Tim Cahill, has been dealt a major blow in his own young footballing career.

The 19-year-old, who is the second of Cahill’s four children, joined A-League club Brisbane Roar in September last year on a multi-year deal.

He had joined the Roar from the academy of Premier League side Everton, the club where his dad became a legend after scoring 56 goals in 226 games over eight years with the Toffees.

Shae Cahill was highly touted when he joined the Roar.

“We are pleased to announce the signing of Shae Cahill from Everton’s world-class academy,” Roar chief executive Kaz Patafta said at the time.

“Securing such a promising young midfielder is a testament to our club’s new vision of integrating youthful talent into our squad and first-team environment.

“Shae’s addition promises an exciting era ahead for the Roar family.”

That era has ended, however, with the club releasing Cahill from his contract nine months after bringing him on board.

The news was confirmed in a statement from the Brisbane club on its website on Friday morning.

Five Roar players have left the club after their contracts expired, while Cahill and Taras Gomulka “have been granted mutual contract terminations and will also depart the club” according to the statement.

Cahill’s player profile is still on the website and his bio states he made his debut as an 18-year-old against the Wanderers at Suncorp Stadium in round six and “impressed with his eye for goal and technical ability”.

Yet he was unable to find a regular place in the senior squad, spending most of his time in recent months with the youth side.

Shae’s next move is so far unknown although he appears to have taken the news in his stride, posting a series of photos to Instagram on holidays on Thursday with the caption “good times”.

Tim Cahill and his childhood sweetheart wife Rebekah Greenfield also have eldest son Kyah, daughter Sienna and youngest son Cruz.

Tim Cahill is one of the greatest players in Australia’s football history.

Now 44, Cahill made 108 appearances for the Socceroos and tallied what was then a record 50 goals, which has since been surpassed in the Aussie records by Matilda Sam Kerr (69).

He appeared in a record four World Cups for Australia and was part of the golden generation that included fellow Premier League standouts Mark Viduka, Harry Kewell and Lucas Neill.

Everton’s player of the season back in 2005, Cahill also spent time with Millwall, New York Red Bulls, Shanghai Shenhua and Melbourne City in his career.
