SERGIO Aguero looks set for a spell on the sidelines after becoming involved in an ugly clash with fans following Manchester City’s FA Cup defeat to Wigan.

Fans spilled onto the pitch at the DW Stadium as the hosts celebrated their 1-0 fifth round win against the runaway Premier League leaders.

Supporters from both clubs were involved in disturbances, while television pictures appeared to show a home supporter and striker Aguero involved in a physical exchange.

The City striker then had to be held back by assistant manager Mikel Arteta as tensions escalated.

City manager Pep Guardiola did not see the trouble having already headed for the dressing room.

“I was in the locker room, I didn’t see it,” said Guardiola. “It’s safer when the fans are not there, but sometimes it happens. The fans respect the players and the players the fans and go inside.”

Wigan manager Paul Cook said: “It’s not correct, but I haven’t seen these incidents so I’d rather not give an opinion, but players’ safety is paramount for everyone.”

Supporters from both clubs were involved in disturbances, while television pictures appeared to show a home supporter and striker Aguero involved in a physical exchange.

Advertising hoardings were ripped out and thrown and a pitch invasion by Wigan fans got out of hand while the defeated City players were being escorted off the pitch.

Video footage also appeared to show objects, including an advertising board, being thrown at police officers by fans in the City end.

The scene turned even uglier, with television cameras in the tunnel capturing footage of Guardiola and Wigan manager Paul Cook in a major verbal confrontation and being kept apart by staff.

Wigan chairman David Sharpe told BBC Radio 5 Live: “Probably, we will get in trouble. It’s not really right what has gone on but it’s the emotions of football.

“I can’t blame the football fans but I don’t like taunting the opposition after a win. There will be plenty of occasions where they can taunt us and we wouldn’t like it so it’s not nice but I can understand why.”

Guardiola and City’s quest to win an unprecedented quadruple is now over following the unexpected 1-0 defeat to the third tier side.

In an uncanny repeat of the 2013 FA Cup final, in which City had a player sent off before losing to a late Wigan winner, Guardiola’s side had Fabian Delph dismissed amid stormy scenes before Will Grigg’s 79th-minute goal decided the game.

It was only City’s second defeat to English opposition since losing an FA Cup semi-final to Arsenal last April while their opponents can now look forward to a quarter-final home tie with Southampton.
