AARON Mooy has confirmed he’s being closely monitored by Manchester City throughout his loan stint at Huddersfield Town, renewing hopes the Socceroos midfielder could yet play for the English Premier League giants.

The former Melbourne City star has also described the standard of the English Championship as being noticeably higher than that of the A-League.

Described by national coach Ange Postecoglou as “the best and most exciting player in the A-League”, Mooy has elicited even more superlatives for his role in helping Huddersfield’s unlikely climb up the table into promotion contention.

The quietly spoken 26-year-old has already twice been named the club’s player of the month for his creativity and technical skill, described by one awe-struck member of the UK press as being “cut from the same silken cloth” as France legend Zinedine Zidane.

Having started 16 from 17 games this season there’s no doubt Mooy is thriving under coach David Wagner at The Terriers, where City immediately sent him on loan after signing him on a four-year deal in July.

Yet he also remains on Pep Guardiola’s radar, revealing City have been in weekly contact about his progress.

“They usually speak to me once a week,” Mooy said.

“They have a scout that comes to the games and they always have clips on me and stuff like that.

“So they always talk to me about how it’s going and how they think I’m doing.”

Mooy said it had been a big step up to the Championship, where he felt the overall quality was stronger than in the A-League.

“It’s faster, it’s probably more competitive. The standard is higher, definitely,” he said.

“The A-League will keep growing every year and hopefully one day we get to that standard.

“There are some really high-quality players in the A-League.

“But the difference between the best players, and not the best players, is pretty big compared to in the Championship (where) it’s a lot closer.

“The squads are much stronger and even the players not playing, there’s not much difference with the players who are playing.”

Mooy will likely continue his potent attacking partnership with fellow Socceroos midfielder Tom Rogic in Tuesday’s World Cup qualifier with Thailand in Bangkok. The duo both see themselves as distinctly different players but Rogic saw that as a strength.

“It’s always good to play with players like him, it makes it easier on the pitch,” Rogic said.

“Aaron’s shown his quality in the A-League and now overseas as well. “He’s an important player in our set-up.”
