Matildas star Steph Catley opened her account for Arsenal with a stunning free kick as the Gunners emerged 5-1 victors over reigning Danish champions HB Køge in the UEFA Women’s Champions League (UWCL).

Fellow Aussie Caitlin Foord also bagged a goal for Arsenal, but it was Catley’s rocket of a set piece on the edge of the 18-yard box in the 27th minute that set the tone for Jonas Eidevall’s side at the Capelli Sport Stadion in Denmark.

On her 21st appearance for the London outfit, Catley lasered the ball into the top-right corner despite the best efforts of HB Køge goalkeeper Kaylan Jenne Marckese to keep it out.

Foord got in on the action in the 68th minute to extend Arsenal’s lead to three goals after Nikita Parris scored the second, with the Aussie finding the back of the net with a header after teammate Jordan Nobbs hit the crossbar.

The Danish side pegged one back through Madalyn Ann Pokorny just three minutes after Foord scored, but the Gunners proved to be too strong in the end, as Anna Patten and Nobbs finished the job with Arsenal’s fourth and fifth goal respectively.

The victory leaves Arsenal in second place in Group C of the UWCL on six points, only three behind leaders Barcelona.

Goals from Catley and Foord arrived just a day after Matildas captain Sam Kerr came agonisingly close to scoring one of the fastest hat-tricks in football in Chelsea’s UWCL match against Swiss champions Servette.

Kerr scored the third and fourth of Chelsea’s seven goals and declared “it will be a night most of us won’t forget for many reasons” post-match.

“It was a good performance, good crowd and Maren (Mjelde) is back,” Kerr said on Wednesday morning (AEDT).

“It’s nice as a player to walk off the pitch knowing you did everything possible to win the game and tonight we can do that. There’s only positives we can take from it and hopefully we can take that into the weekend.”
