JUVENTUS star Kwadwo Asamoah says fans must have faith in his club’s youth brigade, as the understrength Italian superpower prepares for its International Champions Cup opener on Saturday.
Juve, winner of the past five Serie A titles, arrived in Melbourne late on Monday night and had its first training session at South Melbourne’s Lakeside Stadium yesterday morning.
The team’s top goalscorer last season, Paulo Dybala, attracted most attention during the light run-around, while star signing from AS Roma, Miralem Pjanic, was also in the spotlight.
Coach Massimiliano Allegri left 13 stars out of the travelling party, including 10 players from the club’s youth teams.
But midfielder Asamoah insisted Juventus would still put on a show at the MCG against Melbourne Victory this weekend and against Tottenham Hotspur on Tuesday.
“With these games it’s going to be quite difficult, playing against teams that are not from your country and with different styles of play,” Asamoah said.
“For us, it’s very good because we have a lot of young and talented players from our youth team who are also trying to learn new things, so this is going to help them.
“I can’t mention just one or two players, I think they’re all good and they’re all promising players. I know this because we’ve been training with them (in Italy) for the past 10 days and they’re all fantastic.
“I know the fans are going to enjoy watching each and every player we’ve brought here.
“We’re here, importantly, for this tournament, but also good preparation for the new season coming.”
Asamoah, capped 66 times by Ghana, has never been to Australia before but faced the Socceroos at the 2010 World Cup in South Africa.
That match ended 1-1. Brett Holman gave the Socceroos an early lead before Asamoah Gyan levelled from the penalty spot after Harry Kewell was sent off for a goal-line handball.
Asamoah, 27, was full of praise for his Aussie opponents and said he was expecting a similar level of tenacity from Victory.
“It was one of toughest games we’ve played. It wasn’t easy,” he said.
“It ended in a draw. It was very hard, but in the end we were able to qualify for the next stage.
“I must say that Australia has got very good, intelligent footballers. So against Melbourne Victory I’m expecting the same thing. It’s going to be a very good assessment for us.”
