Socceroos great Harry Kewell has embraced his new job as Celtic assistant coach as he prepares to return home in November for the Sydney Super Cup.

Kewell, 43, jumped at the chance to join Ange Postecoglou’s Celtic revolution when approached by the former Socceroos coach.

“I go back to the day that I first received the phone call from the manager (Postecoglou), and I knew there and then that I wanted to come to join Celtic,” Kewell said.

“It’s been fantastic. The way everyone’s embraced me straight away, they’ve just made me feel at home.”

Kewell and Postecoglou will return to Australia with Celtic in November for matches against English Premier League club Everton and A-League outfit Sydney FC in the Sydney Super Cup.

“(The games are) literally only 10 minutes away from where I grew up. It will be exciting but we’re out there to do a job,” said Kewell, whose has fond memories of playing against Everton for both Liverpool and Leeds.

“Everton’s always been a good team for me, because I always seemed to score against them, whether that was with Leeds or in the local (Merseyside) derby.

“They’re a special team, they’re a fantastic team. Both teams (at the Sydney Super Cup) will want to dominate the ball. dominate possession, so when you have the ball, you have to work hard to keep it.”

Postecoglou is looking forward to meeting an EPL opponent.

“The Premier League is one of the leagues that is very popular Down Under, so having us up against a big club is great,” the Celtic manager said.

“Everton is a fantastic football club with proper history and pedigree.

“I know they have a very good following in Australia, so we really look forward to this match in November and the whole occasion of the Sydney Super Cup.”

Celtic is currently on a pre-season camp in Austria, where it thrashed Wiener Viktoria 7-0 on Thursday. (AEST)
“The boys who played today were the ones who came in earlier and have an extra week under their belt,” Postecoglou told Celtic TV.

“They’ve had a good couple of days here. We are not going into these friendly games feeling fresh because we are pushing the boys hard.

“Considering all that, I think the intent and effort was good, particularly in the first half.”

Celtic’s pre-season campaign continues on Sunday morning (AEST) when it meets Rapid Wien.
