Socceroos great Harry Kewell is the latest Aussie to get the axe in the cut-throat world of managing a soccer team in the UK and thought he was doing a good job.

Socceroos great Harry Kewell has been sacked by fourth-tier English club Oldham.

Kewell’s last game in charge was the English League Two club’s overnight 0-0 draw with Southend United.

The result left Oldham 16th on the table.

Kewell, who in charge for less than eight months at the club and had won 17 from 41 matches, said on Twitter he was “proud of my players and coaching staff”.

“I honestly felt we were making good progress despite the inconsistency at times. I knew coming into this job that I wouldn’t have a budget to work with and that time wouldn’t be on my side but I leave without any regrets” he tweeted.

Kewell took charge of the club last August after spells at Notts County, where he was also sacked in 2018 after less than three months in charge, and Crawley Town.

In a club statement, Oldham said: “Harry Kewell has today been relieved of his duties as head coach of Oldham Athletic.

“Arriving in August 2020 he now leaves along with his assistant, Alan Maybury.

“We would like to thank both for their efforts this season and wish them well in the future.”

Kewell’s sacking continues a tough spell for Australian coaches overseas, with Kevin Muscat and Tony Popovic also axed by their respective Belgian and Greek clubs in recent months.

Popovic lasted only nine matches before being sacked by Greek second division club Xanthi last month, while Muscat was shown the door by Belgian outfit Sint-Truiden after just 14 games at the helm.
