Ange Postecoglou is on the verge of arguably the greatest Australian international coaching achievement, with Yokohama F Marinos just 90 minutes away from the Japanese title.
The ex-Socceroos boss has implored his players to maintain the attacking mantra that’s placed them in the box seat, armed with a superior goal difference of seven.
Marinos’ 65 goals in 33 games has underpinned its stunning title tilt, a year after narrowly avoiding relegation, with anything less than a 4-0 loss at home to second-place FC Tokyo enough to secure the J1 League crown.
The feat is even more remarkable considering Yokohama lost its top scorer in July – Brazilian Edigar Junio, who’d scored 11 goals in 16 games.
The band of Aussies, including assistants Peter Cklamovski, Arthur Papas and conditioning coach Greg King, have turned heads in Japan, with Postecoglou vowing to see out the project after signing a contract extension.
“I’m going to be around next year for sure. There’s still stuff that I want to do here. We can get better,” Postecoglou told Fox Sports.
