CARL Veart will have to wait until next month to discover if he has done enough to be named Adelaide United’s new head coach.
The Reds’ hopes of playing finals football were extinguished on Wednesday night when Western United beat Perth Glory 2-0.
Adelaide’s top-six chances had been left hanging by a thread on Tuesday night after a 2-2 draw with Melbourne City.
It was interim coach Veart’s fifth game in charge following the departure of Dutchman Gertjan Verbeek during the A-League’s COVID-19 enforced break.
The Reds were unbeaten in those five matches, with two wins and three draws earning them nine of a possible 15 points.
While it wasn’t enough to secure the Reds finals football, Adelaide were impressive under Veart.
However, the Reds remain in no rush to announce Verbeek’s permanent successor.
The Reds won’t return to Adelaide until Sunday at the earliest.
Once they arrive home, Veart and the rest of his squad will be forced into self isolation for a two-week period that won’t end until next month.
Reds director of football Bruce Djite said after the isolation, he would then sit down with Veart, club chairman Piet van der Pol, and chief executive Nathan Kosmina to speak about the coaching position.
“We’ll discuss his future at that time,” Djite said.
“We’re not having discussions with him now around his future in the coaching role.
“Carl’s definitely put his best foot forward. He said from the very outset `I want this job’ and so far he’s done a fantastic job. I don’t think anyone can question that.
“Whether he gets it (the permanent job), we’ll discuss it in the future.”
After the 2-2 draw with Melbourne City, Veart said he was only focused on getting the “best results for the club”.
“At the end of this when we return back to Adelaide I’ll sit down with the chairman, I’ll sit down with Bruce and Nathan, and then we’ll plan a way forward for the club which is the best for the club,” Veart said.
Djite had been happy with Adelaide’s form since the competition’s resumption last month.
“They’ve done well. Everyone’s been exceptional,” Djite said.
“They’ve definitely been enjoying their football ... that’s the message I’ve been hearing loud and clear from quite a few of the players.
Djite said there were a “lot of candidates” for Adelaide’s coaching job.
“But out of respect for Carl, we’re not going to comment on that,” he said.
It’s understood the Reds at one stage approached Arthur Papas, Ange Postecoglou’s right-hand man at Japanese club Yokohama F. Marinos who is in contention for the Melbourne Victory coaching job.
