FRINGE Socceroo goalkeeper Alex Cisak has emerged as a leading contender to replace the huge hole left by Danny Vukovic at Sydney FC, as coach Graham Arnold grapples with an unexpected recruiting headache.

Sydney have been offered Cisak who Ange Postecoglou has called into several Socceroos squads, after the 28-year-old left Leyton Orient in the wake of the London club’s relegation from the Football League.

Already seeking a right winger to replace Filip Holosko, Arnold has only two visa spots left, and has no marquee position free.

Convinced he would have his squad locked away within days of the end of last season, Arnold’s plans have been disrupted by the injury that will keep rightback Rhyan Grant out until March, as well as the dramatic exit of Vukovic to Bruges.

Born in Krakow, Poland, Cisak moved to Australia while a toddler but signed for Leicester City as a teenager, though he never appeared for the Foxes. Having spent time at a number of clubs, including a variety of loan spells, he was first called up by Postecoglou in 2015.

At Sydney he would compete with Andrew Redmayne to be first choice, with the latter having excelled against Arsenal in the Sky Blues’ recent friendly defeat to the EPL side.

Signing an Australian goalkeeper would allow Arnold to pursue overseas options for right back and right midfield.

Though former Livingstone and Airdrie fullback Jacob Esposito featured at rightback for Sydney in last week’s comfortable defeat of Earlwood, it’s believed the 22-year-old is pursuing options overseas.

Grant is likely to miss the bulk of next season after suffering the second serious knee injury of his career.

Meanwhile Melbourne City’s decorated Danish goalkeeper, Thomas Sorensen, has announced his retirement from professional football. Sorensen was widely expected to stand down, after City secured the signing of Eugene Galekovic.

Playing for three EPL sides, Sorensen was capped more than 100 times for Denmark and played at two World Cups and two European Championships.
