Adelaide United gloveman Paul Izzo has become frustrated by the Reds recent results saying the side is in a slump

Adelaide United keeper Paul Izzo has said “finger pointing” and “the blame game” throughout this season have been wearing thin.

Adelaide United gloveman Paul Izzo says coaches are as culpable as players, claiming “finger pointing” and “the blame game” is wearing thin.

Izzo, 25, said losing 5-1 to Western United at Hindmarsh Stadium last weekend was embarrassing.

The Reds crashed to a third consecutive loss to drop out of the top six for the first time since round five.

“The common trend has been finger pointing this season,’’ Izzo said

“A lot of the time, “it’s this guy, didn’t do his job, this guy, this guy.”

“I think if we’re a real team we win together, we lose together, we concede goals together, we score goals together, so I think everyone has to be held accountable.

“Obviously players, coaches included.

“The biggest thing we have to do is you know focus on ourselves.

“And the blame game doesn’t really work.”

A Childhood Cancer Association Ambassador, Izzo and striker Kristian Opseth visited Immanuel Primary School on Thursday after a midweek day off for the first time under boss Gertjan Verbeek.

Izzo and Opseth mingled with students and staff encouraging them to be active for 20 minutes a day for 20 days outside of school hours in a “Move It March” campaign.

“It’s a good initiative about being active and being outdoors and enjoy life,’’ Izzo said where he also encouraged people to donate to the good cause.

“Kids are always good fun and are up for it as well.”

With 18 points up for grabs before the play offs, Izzo has now conceded the most goals at the Reds since becoming the undisputed No. 1 in 2017/18 season.

Izzo has conceded 37 of 39 goals this season, five goals more than the previous two seasons under former boss Marco Kurz and his final season at Central Coast Mariners.

Adelaide hosts Newcastle Jets at Hindmarsh on Sunday and Izzo says the Reds must deliver a win.

Then meeting the current top five sides starting with away games to Melbourne City (second) and Wellington Phoenix (third), two home matches Sydney FC (first) and Perth Glory (fourth) and Brisbane Roar (fifth) away is set to declare whether the 2019 FFA Cup win was a true indication to where the club is at.

“When you got into slumps like this it (criticism) comes from all angles,’’ Izzo said.

“For me the most important thing is the base, the core of the group is strong, we say what we need to indoors behind closed doors and that’s it.

“Media has got the job to do and fans have every right to criticise and do whatever they want.

“They have come to support us and watch us play, so we expect that as a group, we need to refresh start over this week and get the ball rolling again.”
