MELBOURNE Victory has confirmed the prized signing of Japan superstar Keisuke Honda.
The former AC Milan and CSKA Moscow star, who scored for Japan at the 2018 World Cup, has been capped 98 times by Samurai Blue, scoring 37 goals.
As revealed in the Monday’s Herald Sun, Honda is the biggest A-League signing since 2013-14, when fellow Japan superstar Shinji Ono joined Alessandro Del Piero, Emile Heskey and guest signing David Villa.
Honda, 32, is expected to arrive in Melbourne next week.
“It goes without saying that Keisuke has consistently proven himself at the highest level and we can’t wait to see what he can do in Melbourne,” coach Kevin Muscat said.
“He brings world-class ability and offers great flexibility in the front third of the pitch.
“It’s obviously an added benefit to have him a part of our AFC Asian Champions League campaign too.”
Honda has been a free agent since departing Mexican outfit Pachuca earlier this year.
Honda retired from international football after the World Cup but appears to have had a slight change of heart, saying he had a “new goal” to represent Japan at the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo.
