Melbourne City forward Jamie Maclaren on new coach Erick Mombaerts

They’ve got a new coach and a new style and Melbourne City striker Jamie Maclaren can’t wait to show fans what the team has got to offer this season.

Socceroos striker Jamie Maclaren has warned that Melbourne City will be unrecognisable from last season.

Injury and concussion derailed Maclaren’s and City’s season as he burst out of the blocks after joining in the final hours of the January transfer window.

But six FFA Cup goals in pre-season have taken Maclaren’s City tally to 11 after netting five in nine games last campaign.

Maclaren, who scored in all four FFA Cup matches, was confident he would benefit from life under new coach, Frenchman Erick Mombaerts.

“The fans and neutrals can expect a new City,’’ Maclaren said.

“It didn’t help with all of the stuff happening on the outside, lots of boys off contract. But last season’s last season.

“I’ve thoroughly enjoyed working with Erick. He’s been told he needs to instil the City Football Group style and the way we want to play.

“From day one we’ve had the balls out, worked on how to play and where we need to be.

“We’ve worked on the guys off the ball being more important than the guys on the ball. Players know what to do in certain scenarios.

“We’re clocking up some really good minutes and kilometres in the legs.”

Maclaren’s 2019-20 will have to wait until Round 2 at least, after Graham Arnold called him up for the 2022 World Cup qualifiers against Chinese Taipei and Nepal.

But a home clash against Adelaide United on October 20, five days after the Chinese Taipei clash, will give Maclaren, 26, the chance to exorcise last season’s elimination final demons.

“It’s a shame that Round One happens to be biggest game (Melbourne Victory), but we’ve got a big enough squad to deal with it,’’ he said.

“You’ve got to get on with it. I’ll be back for Round Two and I can’t wait.”
