Liverpool legend Robbie Fowler could be appointed Brisbane Roar coach as early as next week.

Liverpool legend Robbie Fowler could be appointed Brisbane Roar coach as early as next week.

The Roar hope to announce their new coach by the end of the month, with Fowler the clear favourite.

It’s understood that German mentor Marco Kurz, who will leave Adelaide United at the end of the season, is out of the running to coach Brisbane.

Kurz had been linked with the Roar position after impressing Brisbane vice-chairman Chris Fong.

However, it seems former England striker Fowler ¬ who The Courier-Mail revealed in January was interested in the job ¬ is the preferred option.

Darren Davies, who was appointed interim Roar coach following the departure of the club’s longest-serving coach John Aloisi in December, remains a slim chance to become be appointed on a permanent basis.

However, it’s more likely Davies, who is contracted to the Roar until the end of next season, will be part of Fowler’s coaching staff.

Aloisi and his brother Ross, a former Roar assistant coach, have been linked to the Adelaide job to be vacated by Kurz.

It’s understood Adelaide officials have been in contact with representatives of the South Australian Aloisi brothers.

Ross Aloisi is a former Adelaide United captain, while John played for Adelaide City in the old National Soccer League before departing for Europe in his teens.

Meanwhile, former Adelaide United and Sydney FC coach John Kosmina has lost his job as coach of NPL Queensland club and A-League aspirants Brisbane City.

The former Socceroos captain, who has guided City’s fortunes since 2016, has been shifted to a “senior football development” role with the former NSL club, who have lost four of their seven NPLQ matches this season, including a recent 7-0 loss to arch-rivals Lions FC.

“(Kosmina’s) new role aims to assist City with our growth and development strategies and execution as we further progress our strategic plan,” a City statement said.

“John will be working closely with our board, administration team and coaches in a key role to continue the development of our club.

“One of the focus areas will be to continue to work on the collective goal of our bid to join the A-League.”

Englishman Nick Green has been appointed to replace Kosmina as City coach.

Green recently moved to Australia and had been working with City’s under 16 and under 18 teams.
