Former National Soccer League keeper and Hollywood star Anthony La Paglia led his team to an emphatic 7-2 win in the Oz Aid charity game at AAMI Park.
Former Socceroo Sasa Ognenovski netted a double, along with Josip Skoko, Mark Bresciano, ex Matilda Barbieri, comedian Ed Kavalee and David Davutovic, who opened the scoring from a delightful Skoko cross.
Former Manchester City striker Paul Dickov and Archie Thompson netted for Craig Foster’s side.
“Fantastic game. I miss the dressing room spirit. Football is a great equaliser,” said La Paglia, who pulled off a stunning save from Dickov at 1-0.
“The whole point was raising money for Rural Aid. Farmers are the country’s backbone and the fact they can’t eat and make food for us is the ultimate irony.
“The best thing about Rural Aid is that the majority of money is donated.”
Foster was thrilled with the effort.
“Socceroos and Matildas have contributed to the bushfire appeal. The former players wanted to help and it was great that they got the chance,” Foster said.
