In a week where a number of A-League Women’s stars were given a chance to shine on a national stage another future Matilda has emerged – a 17-minute three-goal spree making her hard to ignore.
Sienna Saveska’s impressive first-half hat-trick in Western Sydney Wanderers 5-1 win over Western United has given the struggling side’s season a glimmer of hope.
Her impressive performance won’t have gone unnoticed with interim Matildas coach Tom Sermanni watching on from the grandstand.
Going into the match Wanderer’s hadn’t won a game nor had they scored since the opening round. In fact it was Saveska who scored the team’s last point in their 2-2 draw with Jets in Round 1.
It took Saveska just 10 minutes to get her first goal of the game. It came direct off a corner after a defensive error from United.
Fourteen minutes later Cushla Rue played a delicate cross to Saveska who calmly slotted it past United keeper Chloe Lincoln.
Then just three minutes later Saveska once again gets the ball at her feet – from outside the box she sent it rocketing into the top corner of the net – putting Wanderers up 3-0 by the 27th minute.
Rue then knocked up another after taking on Lincoln to put the home side up 4-0 by the break.
Saveska, 18, is in her third ALW season. She started with WSW before making the move to Sydney FC last season.
It proved a frustrating move for the teen – playing just 57 minutes across four games. The lack of game time likely ruled her out of the U20s World Cup played during the ALW off-season.
The lure of being in the starting side saw her make a return to WSW this season.
She has proven a key signing – her efforts in this weekend’s match proof of that.
With four goals for the season she is now a genuine contender for the Golden Boot.
While the win was exciting for WSW it will leave Western United disappointed.
They had several good chances – the first within the opening minutes of the game – but just didn’t have the composure in front of goal.
United’s Chloe Logarzo, back in her first game since being concussed in her Matildas return last week, got the visitors on the scoreboard in the 63rd minute with a penalty, after a handball in the box.
Defensive errors opened the door for WSW and United just couldn’t regather themselves.
It was a tough day at the office for United keeper Chloe Lincoln – fresh from her Matildas debut against Chinese Taipei.
While Lincoln was to blame for all the goals she did make some questionable decisions.
It was her error that led to Danika Matos’ goal in the 81st minute.
Lincoln had struggled to get a start in the team, with many questioning coach Kat Smith’s decision to use Alyssa Dall’Oste over Lincoln in the opening rounds.
The loss, the heaviest suffered by the Melbourne outfit, will hit United’s confidence hard and drastically impact their goal difference – which could prove crucial come the pointy end of the season.
BRISBANE VS CENTRAL COAST MARINERS
Calls for an upgrade to Perry Park have been revamped after the Brisbane Roar and Mariners clash was forced to be postponed due to wet conditions. There had been significant rainfall across the city on Saturday. Groundsman could be seen sweeping pools of water off the pitch, which was fairly deemed unsafe to play on. The match has been postponed to a date yet to be determined.
SYDNEY FC 1 DEFEATED BY NEWCASTLE KNIGHTS 2
Goal scorers: Indiana dos Santos (Sydney FC), Deven Jackson (Newcastle Jets)
A spectacular goal off a precision touch from Lauren Allan has helped Newcastle Jets pull off the upset of the season against reigning champions Sydney FC. Jets went down to 10 players just 12 minutes in after keeper Danielle Krzyzaniak had a brain fade – taking on Sky Blues’ Princess Ibini in the midfield and tackling her to the ground just 12 minutes into the game. It is her second straight red card this season.
Sydney FC’s Indiana dos Santos scored just 10 minutes later. The scores sat locked at 1-0 until the 86th minute. Sky Blues had squandered several chances – having 26 shots at goal.
Jets Deven Jackson scored a goal in the 86th minute to level the scores.
Then with just seconds on the clock Allan used some insane level of control to execute a flying volley and put the ball in the back of the net – giving the Jets a 2-1 victory.
Alarm bells will be ringing at the Sky Blues who now sit 10th with just one win from the opening six rounds.
