Sydney FC have made their intentions of a third straight championship clear with the signing of Matildas forward Kyah Simon.

The 33-year-old re-joins the club for her third stint, having claimed two championships and two premierships in Sky Blue during her time in 2009-2013 and 2014-2017.

Simon said it feels quite nostalgic to be back in her hometown.

“I had my first taste of winning trophies here with the Sky Blues,” Simon said.

“I guess that was one of the main reasons of what brought me back to the club was the standard and the expectation of winning, but then also the expectation to win silverware.

“And I think as a professional footballer, you want to be successful, no matter where you go, you want to win trophies, medals and championships and that was definitely one of the biggest draw cards for me.”

During her time in the A-League, Simon has been awarded the Julie Dolan medal, the Golden Boot, Players’ Player of the Year and Young Player of the Year honours, all in the 2010-2011 season.

Simon returned to the A-League Women alongside the Central Coast Mariners last season, the same club where she made her professional debut in 2008.

Her first match out in Sky Blue looks set to be the season opener against her former club and Simon said there’s always going to be a bit of a rivalry.

“When you play against your old team there’s always that little bit of extra motivation,” Simon said.

“Ultimately, being in this Sydney FC set up, any team is a rivalry.

“I think when you’re at the top, every team has that extra motivation to want to beat the best and Sydney are the best from last season.”

She only featured in 12 matches last season due to recovering from both an ACL and torn calf which kept her sidelined until the end of January this year.

Simon joins partner Faye Bryson at Sydney FC, after both announcing their departures from the Mariners in the off-season.
