There were 35 players at the basement price of $42,000 in SuperCoach BBL last season. This year, there are only 14, included two added on the opening day of the season. Can you find the right cheapies to fill your bench?

The SuperCoach BBL judges have been much harsher this year.
Last summer, there were 35 SuperCoach BBL players available for the basement price of $42,000.
In BBL09, there are currently just 12.
While mid-season signings or rookies can still be added, the value is much harder to find this season.
Max Bryant, Josh Philippe, Jono Cook, Matthew Gilkes and Ben Manenti were among the best-performed cheapies last season.
Perth Scorchers all-rounder Cameron Green is the player most SuperCoaches have identified as the ultimate cash cow this year.
While Green and Hobart paceman Nathan Ellis loom as the most likely to play in Round 1, several other prospects have put their hand up to feature early.
EVERY 42K SUPERCOACH BBL PLAYER FOR BBL09
Cameron Green (Perth Scorchers) BWL
The Scorchers all-rounder was compared to Andrew Flintoff after his breakout Sheffield Shield game, when he made 121 and 87. He hasn’t bowled since that game due to a back issue and is expected to bowl rarely — if at all — for the Scorchers. His role won’t be hugely friendly in SuperCoach BBL, batting in the middle to lower order. But at basement price he's tough to overlook.

Nick Winter (Adelaide Strikers) BWL
The left-armer is likely competing with Wes Agar and Harry Conway for the third fast-bowling spot at Adelaide alongside Michael Neser and Peter Siddle after Ben Laughlin’s move to Brisbane. Agar leads the race after his Marsh Cup performances for South Australia.

Nathan Ellis (Hobart Hurricanes) BWL
Ellis burst onto the scene during the Marsh Cup, making a name for himself with 5-38 against a NSW team which boasted six Test players. An untimely injury to off-season signing Scott Boland should all but guarantee Ellis gets an early opportunity for the Hurricanes. Hobart’s quicks are likely to be Riley Meredith, James Faulkner and Ellis, with spearhead Jofra Archer on international duties with England.

Aaron Summers (Hobart Hurricanes) BWL
Big quick Summers burst onto the scene two summers ago but hasn’t made a huge impression in the past 12 months. He played twice for the Karachi Kings in February and March but went wicketless. He’s got 13 wickets in nine games for SACA club Woodville this season. The Hurricanes need to replace Jofra Archer but Summers is likely down the pecking order.

Zak Evans (Melbourne Renegades) BWL
Australian under-19 quick Evans will be a back-up to Harry Gurney, Kane Richardson and all-rounders Will Sutherland, Jack Wildermuth and Dan Christian. He might get a taste of BBL but won’t figure prominently.

Jake Fraser-McGurk (Melbourne Renegades) BAT-BWL
The buzz player of Victorian cricket has likely played himself into contention for a BBL debut after his maiden fifties in the Marsh Cup and Sheffield Shield. Fraser-McGurk and Mackenzie Harvey might be vying for the same spot in the Renegades middle-order, although the signing of Pakistani all-rounder Faheem Ashraf has likely pushed the pair out of the best XI.

Will Sutherland (Melbourne Renegades) BAT-BWL
Sutherland is the most popular $42,000 player and recently debuted for Victoria in the Marsh Cup. He bowled encouragingly and only had a brief stint at the batting crease. Most of his SuperCoach BBL points would come from bowling as he will be batting in the lower order. The Renegades will likely decide between Jack Wildermuth and Sutherland.

Lance Morris (Melbourne Stars) BWL
The young Western Australian paceman has signed a full contract at the Stars after joining as an injury replacement during BBL08. Morris was given the same nickname as Shaun Tait, Wild Thing, after unleashing “rockets” against England in a tour game. He’ll provide support for Dale Steyn, Pat Brown, Dan Worrall, Nathan Coulter-Nile and Jackson Coleman.

Henry Thornton (Sydney Sixers) BWL
Another developing fast bowler, Thornton represented Australia at under-19. He has six wickets in three NSW Premier games for Eastern Suburbs this summer. The signing of Jackson Bird to complement Sean Abbott, Ben Dwarshuis and Tom Curran makes it a long shot Thornton will feature in BBL09.

Oliver Davies (Sydney Thunder) BAT
The big-hitting teenager has been earmarked as one of the country’s most exciting batting prospects after compiling 392 runs at last summer’s national championships which included a knock of 207 off 115 balls. Davies also performed strongly against New Zealand in July with three scores above 40 in as many innings. He should get an opportunity at some stage.

Tanveer Sangha (Sydney Thunder) BWL
Teen spinner Sangha has progressed from a development rookie at the Thunder to a full contract. Sangha has vowed to bowl “without fear” if given an opportunity, although expectation will be he starts BBL09 behind Chris Green and Arjun Nair as the Thunder’s preferred spinner. But it’s worth noting he has 11 wickets in three games for Campbelltown-Camden and is averaging 9.75 from three T20s this season.

Harry Conway (Adelaide Strikers) BWL
A recent addition to the Strikers squad after Ben Laughlin’s move to Brisbane Heat, Conway has been one of the most potent bowlers in the Marsh Cup with 11 wickets in six games. The big quick will be jostling with Nick Winter and Wes Agar for a starting role, with Agar likely ahead of Conway as it stands.

Mac Wright (Hobart Hurricanes) BAT-BWL
Wright has been flagged as a supplementary signing for the Hurricanes while Matthew Wade is on Test duties. That should give the leg-spin bowling all-rounder a decent run in the Hobart side, as the Australia-New Zealand Test series doesn’t finish until January 7. Wright was a rookie with Sydney Thunder in BBL05 who has progressed since moving to Tasmania, where he plays with Lindisfarne. Make sure he’s in the Hurricanes squad to face Sydney Sixers in Round 1 before jumping on.

Liam Hatcher (Sydney Thunder) BWL
Red-headed paceman Hatcher impressed in two Marsh Cup appearances for New South Wales, snaring four wickets. He’s been named in Sydney Thunder’s 13-player squad for their Round 1 clash with Brisbane Heat, although he’ll likely be a depth bowler when Gurinder Sandhu returns from injury. Hatcher has been signed as an injury replacement for Sandhu.
