A devastating crash has marred Saturday’s Tour Down Under, leaving a fan hospitalised with serious injuries.
The incident occurred on the final corner of the street circuit race, where four cyclists collided with the barricades at high speed. One rider was sent over the top of the barrier and into the crowd.
A video shared by another spectator captures the moment of the crash, showing the riders tumbling into the protective fencing.
While the lead riders navigated the final bend without issue, the four others misjudged the corner.
Race officials said that the riders entered the turn 20km/h faster than on previous laps, which ultimately caused the crash.
South Australian Premier Peter Malinauskas described the event as an “awful, freak accident”.
He confirmed that a woman, visiting from New South Wales with her husband, had sustained relatively serious injuries. “Tragically last night we did see a significant accident occur at the TDU, where cyclists went into spectators,” he said.
The race organisers confirmed they were in contact with the injured spectator’s family, offering support during the difficult time.
“Our thoughts are with the spectator and their family, as well as the riders impacted by the incident,” the organisers said in a statement.
Italian Manilo Moro (Movistar) was the only one unable to finish the race following the stack.
He continued riding with assistance from a team staff member, visibly struggling as he made his way to the finish line.
Moro is reportedly undergoing further treatment for his injuries.
Saturday’s race was part of the traditional street race that kicks off the Tour Down Under, giving international riders an early chance to get some competitive action before the main event.
This year’s Tour Down Under, celebrating its 25th anniversary, officially begins on Tuesday.
Australian Sam Welsford claimed victory in the race.
