MATTHEW Wade showed guts and skill to stand up to heat and searing pressure and star with the gloves for Australia, but ultimately his fate as wicketkeeper will be decided by his performance with the bat.
Selectors thought long and hard about abandoning the staple of the specialist keeper and going with part-timer Peter Handscomb behind the stumps.
However, Wade was given one last chance to save his spot and justified the selectors’ faith in the importance of a professional stumper.
Wade responded to a barrage of criticism to execute a superb stumping off Nathan Lyon, taking a ball from far down the leg-side and bringing it all the way back to whip off the bails to catch Bangladesh batsman Sabbir Rahman the barest millimetre out of his ground.
CHOPPING BLOCK: Wade is on borrowed time
DAY ONE REPORT: Lyon roars before Tigers growl
Earlier, the pugnacious gloveman took an excellent catch standing up to Ashton Agar.
On a brutally hot day where temperatures soared well above 30 and the humidity suffocated, Wade put his head down and produced an extremely tidy day with the gloves.
Lyon said Wade was inspirational.
“It’s massive. We talk about having energy and intent when we go out on the field there,” said Lyon.
“Matty has been really working hard with Brad Haddin our assistant coach on this tour and Brad has always been about leading from the front. He always spoke about that when he was keeping for Australia.
“Matt Wade has been brilliant. He got good reward from that stumping today. It wasn’t the best ball I’ve ever bowled, but thought he did a pretty good job in severe heat.”
However, the day one showing will not earn him an Ashes berth unless he can also break his run drought in Chittagong.
