The equation is simple now: win every match from here and the T20 World Cup title is ours

Opening night didn’t go to plan for Australia in this T20 World Cup. But with no more room for error, Ash Gardner promises a reaction against Sri Lanka on a WACA wicket that will suit the hosts.

Ash Gardner's Indigenous heritage pride

We were all obviously gutted not to start our World Cup campaign with a victory, especially in front of such a fantastic crowd in Sydney, and there’s no hiding from the fact that we weren’t at our collective best.

But in one way things haven’t changed and at least we now know what we have to do: win every match from here to the final, which we are confident we will.

The women in this Australian team are good at not dwelling on the past and especially in tournament play. You can’t sit there and dwell on the things that happened in the last game, especially when you’ve got another game so quickly.

It would have been a really nice feeling to go into our second game with a win under our belts, but it wasn’t to be.

The slow wicket in Sydney has been a talking point since our 17-run loss and I think if we knew that was how the second innings was going to play, we might have chosen to bat first after winning the toss.

We knew what sort of wicket we were going to come up against at Sydney Showgrounds, it was always going to be a slow, low wicket, and it proved to be exactly that.

Though it was still a shock to be bowled by a ball that bounced twice!

I’ve seen a lot in my three years in the green and gold, but facing that delivery from India’s Poonam Yadav will be something difficult to forget.

Poonam bowls very slow and that’s how she’s been so successful, she drags batters out of their crease and gets them stumped or bowled.

With one of her balls to me, I lost my stumps but it was called a no-ball because the ball had bounced twice before it reached the crease.

Gardner was one of only two Australian batters, along with Alyssa Healy, who put on runs against India.

Another talking point has been whether our batters struggle facing spin, but there is definitely no issue with that for us at all.

It’s more that Poonam is a one-of-a-kind, and if we face India again in this tournament – which would be in the final on March 8 – we will be better prepared.

We’ll be facing another spin-heavy bowling unit on Monday night, Sri Lanka, and I don’t think that’s a bad thing for us. We’re playing on a totally different wicket at the WACA where the ball’s not going to turn as much and there’ll be more bounce.

Gardner expects a different kind of wicket when Australia face Sri Lanka in Perth.

But this game will come down to our ability to adapt quickly to what the Sri Lankans dish up to us.

We’ll be ready: we’ve trained really hard this week and we’re all set with our individual and team plans.

There’s definitely no sense of panic. Just a need for a reaction. And we’ll be delivering one in Perth.
