The Ashes 2019: ODI skipper Aaron Finch concedes he has no chance of featuring for Australia

Aaron Finch began the last summer as Australia’s Test opener, but was dropped after a dry run against India. He doesn’t expect to get the call again for the upcoming series against England.

Aaron Finch concedes no amount of World Cup runs will help him regain his Test spot, admitting he holds no hopes of playing in the Ashes.

Australia’s first serious Ashes trials will begin this week, with the first Australia A tour game in Northampton on June 20.

The group won’t play red-ball cricket until early July, but the one-day squad still includes the likes of Kurtis Patterson, Travis Head, Peter Handscomb and James Pattinson.

Finch began the last summer as Australia’s Test opener, but was dropped after a dry run against India.

And while he sits fifth on the World Cup run-scoring lists headed in Saturday’s clash with Sri Lanka, he says even any chance of playing in the Australia-Australia A tour match before the Test squad is announced is unlikely.

“Obviously I’d love to play if the opportunity comes up,” Finch said.

“I think being The Ashes I’m way down the list, having missed my opportunity throughout the summer.

“The short answer is, no.

“Of course I’d love to. But the young guys have come in and done such a good job, and they have got such bright futures, all of them.”

Marcus Harris is now seen as the front-runner to return to partner David Warner at the top of the order in the Test side when he returns.

Joe Burns scored a century in his last Test in Canberra, but has been dealt a blow after going home early in the County season while suffering from chronic fatigue.

Cameron Bancroft could also be another option with his nine-month ban following the ball-tampering saga over.

Usman Khawaja, Steve Smith and Travis Head appear locks for Australia’s team for the first Test at Edgbaston on August 1.

That likely leaves Patterson, Will Pucovski, Marnus Labuschagne, Marcus Stoinis and Burns fighting for the No.6 spot in the Test team.

Labuschagne, in particular, has used County cricket to push his cause this summer, topping the Division 2 run-scoring charts with 653 at 65.3 for Glamorgan, including three centuries.

He hit 83 from 90 against Derbyshire on Friday.
