Ashes superstar Jimmy Anderson appears an unlikely starter for the first Test at Edgbaston after scans confirmed the veteran bowler has torn his calf.
Anderson, 36, has been ruled out of his next two County Cricket games for Lancashire with the England and Wales Cricket Board on Sunday night confirming he was in a race to be fit for the August 1 clash against Australia.
“The MRI (on Anderson’s right calf) confirmed that he has suffered a low-grade calf muscle tear,” the ECB said.

“As a result of the injury, he will commence a rehabilitation program with the England and Lancashire medical teams.
“He will be reassessed on an ongoing basis regarding his availability for the Test against Ireland at Lord’s on July 24 and the Ashes series against Australia starting on August 1.”
Anderson attempted to bowl the third ball of his 19th over in last week’s clash three times before clutching his calf and being ruled out of the match.
The swing bowler remains a key Test weapon for England given his ability to swing the Dukes ball.
Anderson has a record 575 wickets in 148 Tests for England.
