Rishabh Pant keeps up the banter with Tim Paine behind the stumps

India turned up the pressure on Tim Paine with wicketkeeper Rishabh Pant warned to “be careful” after serving a verbal barrage to Aussie skipper as soon as he came out to bat.

India turned up the pressure on Aussie captain Tim Paine and his talkative ways behind the stumps with a verbal barrage that added spice into the series.

The increased volume of the stump mikes has become a talking point through the three Tests as the on-field exchanges, which have been relatively cordial so far, continue to create mixed reactions.

But umpire Ian Gould had to twice tell Indian keeper Rishabh Pant to “be careful” on day four at the MCG after he took aim at Paine for five straight balls as soon he came out to bat.

He called Paine a “temporary captain”, coming a week after Indian captain Virat Kohli allegedly called the Aussie skipper a “stand in” in the second Test in Perth.

Indian officials refuted the accusations against Kohli, calling the claims “baseless”. But the words used by Pant suggest a concerted effort from the Indians to get under Paine’s skin

Paine was praised for his increased vocal presence behind the stumps in the opening two clashes.

His “you can’t seriously like him as a bloke” line about Indian captain Virat Kohli in Perth enhanced his standing as skipper among most Aussie fans.

Humour has been at the core of Paine’s chatter and he didn’t let up on day three at the MCG when he tried to entice the enigmatic Indian keeper in to a big shot.

“Tell you what, big MS (Dhoni) is back in the one day squad too, we might get him down to the (Hobart) Hurricanes this bloke, we need a batter,” Paine said to Pant.

Paine even suggested they could organise a nice “apartment on the water” and, really testing Pant’s patience, asked him if he could “babysit”.

Playing in just his seventh Test, Pant was stony faced at the time. But as soon as Paine came to the wicket with his team 5-135 and staring down the barrel of a big defeat, pant let loose.

Standing up to the stumps as Indian spinner Ravindra Jadeja bowled, Pant questioned the Aussie skipper’s standing.

“Have you ever heard of a temporary captain, ever?” Pant said to close in fielder Mayank Argawal.

“He’s a special guest up here boys, just a temporary captain. Loves to talk it’s all he can do.

“Lots of responsibility. Always running away. You don’t need anything to get him out.”

After the banter continued the next over, umpire Gould called Pant out, and told him to “be careful”.

Kohli has declared that as “long as there is no swearing” the on-field chat would continue.

Paine, who was caught by Pant off Jadeja for 26, has said all the players were conscious of the stump mikes being on but also that his players wouldn’t be quiet on the field.
