Pat Cummins and Marnus Labuschagne honoured at 2019 ICC Awards

Five Australians were named in the Test Team of the Year, but Ben Stokes received the highest accolade after an unforgettable 12 months.

Pat Cummins, Marnus Labuschagne, Ellyse Perry and Alyssa Healy are Australia’s biggest winners at the 2019 ICC Awards.

Cummins was named Test Cricket of the Year after a phenomenal twelve months in the longest format, where he claimed 59 wickets at 20.13. The 26-year-old was the highest wicket-taker in the recent Ashes series, and finished 2019 the No. 1 bowler in the ICC Test rankings.

Cummins becomes the fifth Australian to receive the pretigious accolade, joining Steve Smith (2015, 2017), Mitchell Johnson (2014), Michael Clarke (2013) and Ricky Ponting (2006).

“It’s a tremendous honour to be considered the best player of last year and one which was certainly unexpected,” Cummins said.

“I owe much to my team, teammates and all those involved in Australian cricket for what was a really successful year for the team.

“The highlight was certainly being able to retain the Ashes which was a great reward for the hard work that went into that tour.”

Five Australians were named in the Men’s Test Team of the Year, which is packed with Aussie bowlers.

Despite being ommitted from four Ashes Test matches, paceman Mitchell Starc was named in XI alongside teammates Nathan Lyon, Marnus Labuschagne, Smith and Cummins.

Labuschagne’s incredible rise in 2019 continued on Wednesday, receiving the Men’s Emerging Cricketer Award.

After replacing Smith as a concussion substitute during the second Ashes Test at Lord’s, Labuschagne has dominated the Test arena, scoring 1249 runs at 83.26. He was the highest run-scorer in Test cricket last year, and currently sits at 3rd on the ICC batting rankings.

Previous Australians to receive the accolade include Josh Hazlewood (2015), Peter Siddle (2009) and Shaun Tait (2007).

“It’s a very big honour to win this award. I’ve got to thank my whole team and everyone that’s been involved with my success, but more importantly the team’s success” Labuschagne said.

“We had an amazing Ashes campaign and an amazing home summer. It’s been agreat year for the Australian cricket team and hopefully it can continue. Thank you guys.”

Only one Australian was named in the Men’s ODI Team of the Year, and there’s no surprises as to who that was.

Starc became the first cricketer to take the most wickets in two consecutive World Cups, repeating his heroics from 2015. The left-armer claimed 27 scalps in the 2019 tournament, breaking the all-time record set by Glenn McGrath in 2007.

Starc finished 2019 with a one-day bowling average of 18.59, and still boasts the best strike rate in ODI history.

Ashes and World Cup hero Ben Stokes won the Sir Garfield Sobers Trophy for Men’s Cricketer of the Year after an unforgettable home summer.

Stokes was England’s highest run-scorer during their famous World Cup Final victory over New Zealand in July, his classy 89 not out guiding the hosts to a nailbiting Super Over.

Less than two months later, the 28-year-old completed one of the greatest Test innings this century, his 135 not out at Headingley securing an unfathomable one-wicket win.

The previous English cricketer to win the prestigious trophy was Jonathan Trott in 2011.

Indian captain Virat Kohli won the Spirit of Cricket Awards for his classy gesture during their World Cup match against Australia.

As Indian fans booed the returning Australia duo of David Warner and Smith, Kohli waved to get the fans’ attention. He pointed towards Smith and clapped his hands, suggesting his legion of followers should be applauding, not booing the Aussie superstar.

Kohli also sought Smith out and shook his hand in a superb act of sportsmanship.

Australian all rounder Ellyse Perry unsurprisingly bagged the Rachael Heyhoe-Flint award for Women’s Cricketer of the Year, as well as ODI Player of the Year.

Perry dominated the 2019 Ashes, a series where she plundered a century during the one-off Test match and claimed 7/22 in a record-breaking spell at Canterbury.

The 29-year-old took 21 ODI wickets in 2019 at an impeccable average of 13.52. She also smashed 441 runs in the calendar year at a batting average of 73.50.

One of Wisden’s Five Cricketers of the Decade, Perry is slowly cementing herself as one of the greatest all rounders to ever play the game.

Australian wicketkeeper Alyssa Healy was named the Women’s T20 Cricketer of the Year for a second consecutive time after a record-breaking twelve months in the shortest format.

Healy’s 148 not out against Sri Lanka at North Sydney Oval is the highest WT20I score in history. She only needed 46 deliveries to reach triple figures in an innings that featured 26 boundaries.

The 29-year-old averaged 53.14 in nine T20I innings at a ferocious strike rate of 173.01 last year. Healy was also the highest run-scorer in ODI cricket in 2019, with 669 runs at 60.81.

Perry and Healy featured in both the ODI and T20 Women’s Team of the Year, alongside a cluster of Australian teammates.

Australian captain Meg Lanning, Jess Jonassen and Megan Schutt were also named in the ODI XI, with Lanning and Schutt also featuring in the T20I side.
