Former AFL star Brad Green has linked up with Big Bash champion Melbourne Renegades while ‘The Wild Thing’ Shaun Tait is onboard as the club’s bowling coach.

Green, who captained Melbourne in 2011 and played 254 games for the club, has worked as an assistant coach at Carlton and North Melbourne since retiring from football eight seasons ago.

The 38-year-old has been signed as a leadership consultant and will work closely with Renegades coach Michael Klinger, captain Aaron Finch and the club’s squad this season.

Tait, 36, played for the Renegades in the inaugural BBL and made a name for himself by overheating the speed gun as a dynamic white-ball cricketer.

Tait will help nurture the club’s battery of fast bowlers, including World Cup squad member Kane Richardson, English import Harry Gurney and emerging star Will Sutherland.

The appointments have locked in the team’s coaching panel for their championship defence. Interim Victoria coach Lachie Stevens and Andre Borovec will serve as Klinger’s assistants this summer.

While Klinger was only signed this month there is expected to be minimal changes to how the Renegades play.

Klinger was poised to join Melbourne Stars as batting coach before winning the top Renegades job when coach Andrew McDonald joined Australian coach Justin Langer.

The Renegades were impressed that Klinger led Gloucestershire to three finals in four summers in England on a shoestring budget.

“(Klinger) knows the game inside-out from Big Bash level being part of a very successful Perth Scorchers dynasty,” Finch said.

“(Gloucestershire) play a style of cricket a bit like we do at the Renegades.

“They stay in the contest and they hang around.”

Wicket-keeper Sam Harper had a hit with Klinger this week due to the abandoned Sheffield Shield match at the MCG.

“For me, as a top-order batter (No.3) in Twenty20, it’s great to have him who’s been a top-order batter for 10-12 years at T20 level,” Harper said.
