Jos Buttler will assess his position as England captain after bowing out of Champions Trophy

A third straight major tournament failure has Jos Buttler weighing up his future as England’s white-ball captain.

Jos Buttler will assess his position as England’s white-ball captain after he steered his side to another failed major tournament.

England bowed out of the Champions Trophy overnight after losing to Afghanistan by eight runs.

The loss follows a first-match defeat to Australia, where they failed to defend the highest Champions Trophy total, and a disastrous white-ball tour of India.

It was England’s third consecutive botched tournament under Buttler, following failures in the 2023 (ODI) and 2024 (Twenty20) World Cups.

Buttler withheld from any “emotional statements” post-game but conceded he would consider his status as captain.

“I don’t want to make any emotional statements, but I think it’s fair to say you’ve got to consider all possibilities,” he told Sky Sports.

“No, I’ve enjoyed it (the captaincy). I have seen lots of people say it doesn’t sit well with me but I do enjoy it, I enjoy the challenge. I obviously don’t enjoy losing games of cricket and the results.”

England has lost more one-day internationals than it has won since the 2019 World Cup win on home soil.

Buttler, who has scored just two one-day half-centuries in his past 20 one-day innings, said he had to work out whether his captaincy was best for the team.

“When they’re (results) not going well you do look at yourself in the mirror and say ‘am I part of the problem or am I part of the solution’?” he said.

“I think that’s what we’ve got to work out.”

Former England captain Nasser Hussain doesn’t think the captaincy suits Buttler and is urging him to “let it go”.

“It can be the most difficult thing to do (let the captaincy go), I thoroughly like Jos Buttler as a human being, he’s a very likeable young man,” he said.

“He’s popular in that dressing room, he’s popular with everyone that has played the game with him but that’s not his job to be popular, his job is to make England white-ball cricket better.

“If he’s saying there’s a lot of talent in that dressing room; their win percentage has fallen off a cliff, they’ve gone out in group stages of 50-over World Cup, they’ve gone out in the group stage of Champions Trophy and they’ve lost their last four bilateral series and his form has diminished.

“I don’t think it sits comfortably on his shoulders, I have never looked at Jos Buttler and said ‘oh wow, what a leader’.”

Hussain, who captained England in 45 Test matches, believes Buttler firing with the bat is a greater asset to the side than his captaincy.

“He (Buttler) doesn’t have that presence in the field an Eoin Morgan had for example, that’s a bad comparison because you’re talking about England’s greatest ever white-ball captain and he’s a very hard act to follow,” Hussain said.

“But I don’t think as far as the captaincy goes, Jos Buttler has added that much to this England cricket team.

“It’s taken away from his batting and when you add the two together, if you’re taking so much away from a great player and not gaining on the other side with leadership and captaincy and considering all options, I think it is probably time to move on.”
