Glenn McGrath flies onto Cricket Australia’s board radar

Glenn McGrath is the latest former legend on Cricket Australia’s hit list as the governing body’s search for board members with high “cricket IQ” becomes more desperate.

Fast bowling superstar Glenn McGrath has been discussed as a potential surprise choice on the Cricket Australia board.

The resignation of former captain Mark Taylor has left a gap for a player to join Michael Kasprowicz, who remains the sole former Australian player on the board.

Adam Gilchrist was informally approached last week but declined due to family and media commitments, including his new role as head of the Fox Sports cricket coverage.

The board have discussed McGrath and plan to sound him out about his availability.

McGrath has expanded his business interests since his retirement a decade ago and remains one of Australia’s most respected former players.

The slight catch is the concern over board members who have media commitments after Taylor had an agonising few weeks during the recent board implosion as he juggled allegiance to CA with his role as a Channel 9 sports show panellist.

McGrath is contracted to the Macquarie radio network, who will broadcast the cricket summer though these responsibilities are not likely to impede any approach.

Meanwhile, pressure continues to mount on embattled Australian Cricketers’ Association president Greg Dyer to step down.

Former Test great Ian Chappell said the ACA needed to conduct their own cull after CA staged a major bloodletting which included chairman David Peever, chief executive James Sutherland and Taylor.

Chappell said Dyer’s plea to have banned players Steve Smith, David Warner and Cam Bancroft reinstated in the wake of CA’s cultural review was “provocative and opportunistic’’.

Former Test keeper Ian Healy said the players’ body, of which Healy was once president, needed to have a good look at itself.

“Cricket Australia has done a major review and now the ACA should look at their own management, executive and staff and assess their performance,’’ Healy said.

“They have been part of some of the problems.’’
