GLENN Maxwell should keep his mouth shut and focus on getting some runs to force his way back into the Test team, according to cricket fans.
Maxwell lit a fuse this week when he revealed his “pain” at a decision by Victorian captain Matthew Wade to bat himself higher up the order, a move he felt was affecting his chances of a Test recall.
Some fans said Maxwell was right to take a swipe at his one-day international teammate, while others are adamant “The Big Show” needs to pull his head in and let his batting do the talking as he bids to return to the Australian Test team.
Maxwell has been fined an undisclosed sum by Australia’s leadership group for his “disrespectful” comments about Wade. Australian captain Steve Smith said Maxwell and Wade have spoken, and the side will now move on and focus Australia’s opening one-day clash against New Zealand at the SCG on Sunday.
“Everyone was disappointed in his comments. I’ve expressed that to him myself and spoke to the team,” Smith said.
HERE’S WHAT THE READERS ARE SAYING:
BACKING MAXY
“Maxwell has every right to feel the way he does. It’s ridiculous that he and white bat below Wade in the Vic team. I don’t think his comments were that offensive.” Chris
“The best thing for Maxwell to do is let his bat do the talking, put his head down and get the runs consistently.” Ron
“What is it with cricketers? They go out on the field and say whatever they want to offend, hurt and harass, but make one valid comment in the media regarding your position in the state team and you get sanctioned by the national team.” Chris
“Should he have aired his dirty laundry in the media? Absolutely not! Is what he said correct? Absolutely! Wade is kidding himself batting before White and Maxwell. Clear self interest!” Rod
“Comments like Glen Maxwell’s used to be considered fun banter but now we are so stupidly over politically correct; no one can share their feelings. What a terrible world we live in now.” Elizabeth
NOT SO SUPPORTIVE
“Should try closing the mouth and let the bat do the talking. Has been pretty ordinary this season. Is definitely not a test batsman.” Barry
“Depends on form though, if your wicketkeeper is averaging 50 and the all rounder is averaging 30 then the wicketkeeper gets the number 7 role.” Craig
“Massive Maxwell fan but whingeing to the media saying if the Vic captain batted me where I wanted to bat I would be in the test team is poor form. Cricket is a team sport and that is not working as a team. To be honest I don’t think that’s why he missed out, the truth is he is Victorian and Maddinson is from nsw so he missed out.” Mick
“Maxwell is a highly overrated player. Doesn’t deserve to bat higher than seven in the order.” Norm
“If Maxwell wanted to speak the truth. He would be saying what a hack of.a cricketer he is who had no respect for the team and only plays for himself. Just sayin.” Greg
“Lightweights often have the most to say.” David
