GLENN Maxwell could be forced to wait another 24 hours to find out whether he has done enough to rejoin the Australian one-day team.

And the enigmatic all-rounder could use that time to sound out Aussie skipper Steve Smith for a face-to-face chat in Melbourne after the captain gave Maxwell a public dressing down when he was left out of the ODI squad.

Maxwell has racked up back to back Big Bash fifties since his omission including a lone-hand 60 off 39 balls in the Melbourne Stars loss to Adelaide on Tuesday night.

After that innings Maxwell addressed Smith’s criticism, which included an assessment that he needed to “train smarter”.

The Victorian said he would take the chance to catch-up with the captain before Australia’s one-day clash with England at the MCG on Sunday to find out where he really stands.

“I’ll address that with Steven personally. I know what it’s like to say things in the media and for things to happen. I’m sure there were only good intentions behind it, he was only trying to get the best out of me,” Maxwell said.

“There’s not much you can say to a guy who is second best to the Don. I’ll listen to him and I’ll be doing my best to get on his right side and play for Australia.

“We get along really well. We have got a good friendship. I’m sure it will be fine.”

Maxwell remains in the hunt to rejoin the Aussie ODI team as a replacement for the injured Chris Lynn.

But the national selection panel is believed to be in no rush to name a new player, and the announcement could be made as late as Friday.

With BBL games on both Wednesday and Thursday featuring players of interest for the spot, including Hobart’s Darcy Short and Ashton Turner from the Perth Scorchers, selectors are keen to hold fire.

During Maxwell’s innings on Tuesday night however Ricky Ponting, who will join the Australian coaching set-up during February’s T20 games, said there was no better middle order player, not in the national team, than the Victorian.
