PHIL Jaques is set to be named as NSW’s new cricket coach early next week.
It’s understood Brad Haddin withdrew his application, from what was a two-horse race, on Friday night.
The Blues have done a major clean-out of their playing and coaching staff after poor performances over the past couple of seasons.
After sacking former coach Trent Johnston, NSW launched a hunt for a replacement with the race coming down to Jaques and Haddin.
It’s understood Jaques will be announced as the Blues new coach on Monday.
The former left-hand Test opener was the Blues batting coach last season and previously had a short stint as the head coach of Queensland.
NSW believe Jaques’ nurturing style will be good for the young squad at the Blues.
It’s understood Cricket Australia were pushing for Haddin to get the job given he has impressed as Australian fielding coach and in other CA roles.
The Daily Telegraph understands Haddin has withdrawn from the race, with the announcement taking longer than expected and timing getting close to when he’s due to fly out for Australia’s one-day tour of England on Monday.
Haddin will continue in his role as an assistant to Justin Langer, which he is contracted in until after the 2019 Ashes.
