Former skipper Cameron White has not been offered a new contract with Victoria

Cameron White first captained Victoria as a 20-year-old and has been at the forefront of the state’s biggest cricket moments. However, all that counted for little when he was dumped from the contracted players list.

Former Victorian and Australian captain Cameron White’s “unrivalled” cricket intellect could be lost to another state after he wasn’t offered a contract for next season.

The 35-year-old made it clear to Victorian officials his desire was to play on in to a 20th season but it’s believed he was told it wouldn’t be with the state he first captained as a 20-year-old.

White has attracted interest from other states not only to play Big Bash but also to help out their state programs given his wealth of experience and knowledge.

He not only captained the Vics, but was also an Australian T20 skipper, and led teams in the BBL, Indian Premier League and county cricket in England.

White played in Victoria’s winning Sheffield Shield and one day teams in the season just finished, and was also part of the Melbourne Renegades BBL triumph.

The Shield title was his sixth in a stellar career which also included playing Test, one-day and T20 cricket for Australia.

Despite that, Victorian officials have made the decision to move on from White, with little or no explanation.

It was pointed out by those close to White that he is a month younger than Shaun Marsh, who was recently given a Cricket Australia contract, and is part of the World Cup squad.

Veteran bowler Peter Siddle, just a year younger than White at 34, has been offered a one-year extension with the Vics.

White, who captained Victoria in a record 77 matches after being given the captaincy when he was just 20, averaged 32.14 across nine Shield matches this season, including a century.

He was a key part of the Vics’ one-day triumph last October, making 332 runs at 47.42 including 88 in the win in the final over Tasmania.

The omission of White from Victoria’s list of 20 contracted players, which is expected to be confirmed on Wednesday, is made more stark given batsman Marcus Harris and fast bowler James Pattinson have been given CA contracts.

That opened up at least two spots on the Vics list, one which is expected to be filled by batsman Nic Maddinson, who made three consecutive hundreds in his first three Shield games last summer having started the season without a contract.
