Focus turns to home T20 World Cup success for record-breaking Australian captain Meg Lanning

The enormity of Australia’s world record ODI winning streak is not lost on skipper Meg Lanning, but she has already turned her focus to the business of winning next year’s home T20 World Cup.

A determined Meg Lanning says Australia must extend its historic winning streak into next year’s T20 World Cup if they’re to avoid the heartbreak of losing a tournament on home soil.

Despite having won eight of their past nine T20 games and posting an 18th consecutive ODI victory in Wednesday’s rout of Sri Lanka, Lanning is already focused on the task awaiting them in February.

“T20 World Cups are hard to win and we’ve experienced those highs and lows over the past four or five years, so we understand how difficult it can be,” Lanning told The Courier-Mail at Thursday’s WBBL launch.

“A home World Cup is something new to us as well so we’re going to try and embrace it and really enjoy it.

“We’ve got a bit to do before that point but I think the group will be ready to go once that time comes around.”

That’s not to say the enormity of winning 18 games straight is lost upon the Aussie skipper with Lanning permitting herself a brief moment of reflection before gearing up for another season with Perth Scorchers

“We’ve had a little bit of time to look back on it now and it is a special achievement,” Lanning said.

Lanning was in blistering form through two whitewash series wins against Sri Lanka.

“It’s not easy winning that many games in a row in such a competitive environment so it’s something in time that we’ll look back a little more on but to take over a team led by Belinda Clark is very special.

“Overall I think we were pretty consistent and definitely dominated with the bat through the (Sri Lankan) series which is really pleasing.

“There’ll be little things along the way to fix at but sometimes you’ve got look back and say that we played some good cricket and I think we did that as a side.”
