England’s incredible batting display shows Aussie ODI style is outdated, writes Russell Gould

IT was brutal, just complete carnage. And after watching the Poms’ record run feast overnight, Russell Gould writes it’s time the Aussies changed their ways.

IT was brutal, just brutal. Carnage, destruction, hitting at its powerful best.

It looked like England would get 500. They probably should have too.

Eoin Morgan made the fastest 50 in English one-day history, smashing 67 off 30 balls, and he didn’t even come in until the 38th over.

“When Morgs (captain Eoin Morgan) came out, he said ‘if we’re ever going to do it (get 500), now’s the time’ but we didn’t quite get there,” Alex Hales said.

Hales was nearly unstoppable himself. He made 147 off 92 balls. That was after his first five were dots. Then he hit five fours in his next eight, and just kept going.

He likes Trent Bridge a lot. It’s his home ground, he plays for Nottingham, and he made 171 there two years ago.

That was when England posted 3-444, which was the first time the most confident batting line-up in one-day cricket set the world record.

England didn’t get 500 this time but punished the aimless Australian attack to post 481. They didn’t start slowly, posting 79 in the first 10 overs.

But it was slow compared to the rest of the innings. In each 10 over block that followed, they just kept getting more runs. In the final 10 overs they smashed 125.

Andrew Tye has only played seven one-day games but may never play another. In one nine-ball stretch he went for 42 runs. He finished with 0-100, off only nine overs.

England were scoring at such a rapid rate they didn’t just better their old mark, they beat it by 37 runs. They reeled in the old record in the 46th over. Like it was nothing.

The local press poked a little bit of fun at Aussie vice-captain Aaron Finch the day before England posted a world record 481 when he said it would be “foolish” of the reigning World Cup champions to copy their opponents playing style.

“We’ve won a lot of World Cups, we’ve got some guys in the change rooms that have won them. What we do is right, we know that,” Finch said.

But is it?

England deal mainly in boundaries. They smashed 62 this time, pulverising an admittedly understrength Australian bowling attack. There were 21 sixes, two of which went out of the ground.

That’s how to play one-day cricket.

There’s no talk of consolidation through the middle overs, of hanging around so you can have a late whack.

England goes from start to finish, sees 350 as a benchmark, and tries to pass it every time they go out to bat.

Australia has passed 350 just three times since it won the World Cup in 2015. That’s three times in the past 48 matches.

In that time the Aussies have fallen so far down the rankings they are now sixth, the lowest spot since 1984.

If that’s not an indication that maybe they need to change, and maybe take a leaf out of England’s book, surely watching them smash 481 is.
