CHRIS Gayle’s unfortunate sideline interview with Mel McLaughlin was a rare cause for America to take an interest in cricket - and its media didn’t miss.

Gayle was slammed by US writers after an inappropriate exchange with McLaughlin in which he asked her for a drink and ended with: “Don’t blush, baby”.

Offbeat news site Deadspin produced a vintage takedown of Gayle, headlining a short piece: “Sh*tty cricket man harasses female sideline reporter”.

“Melbourne Renegades batsman Chris Gayle decided to act like a butthole when sideline reporter Mel McLaughlin attempted to interview him during a game against the Melbourne Stars,” Deadspin’s Tom Ley wrote.

“Gayle came at McLaughlin with all kinds of cringe-worthy come-ons, and clearly made her very uncomfortable.”

USA Today’s For The Win also hit Gayle with a strong headline: “Cricket player tries to flirt with reporter in creepy, awkward interview”.

“Come on, dude. This is 2016. Be professional and let the reporter do her job,” FTW’s Luke Kerr-Dineen wrote.

The New York Postnoted Gayle’s actions in a piece titled: “’Don’t blush, baby’: This interview gets real awkward, real quick”.

“A cricket star’s comments to a female reporter during an interview broadcast live on Australian television is drawing scorn,” the Post’s story said.

“Chris Gayle, who plays for the Melbourne Renegades of the Big Bash League, while leading his team to a win Monday night, suggested to television reporter Mel McLaughlin that the pair go out for a drink. He added, “Don’t blush, baby,” during an awkward pause in the interview.”

The Bleacher Report treated the story straight, reporting that “McLaughlin handled the unwelcome request professionally, replying, ‘I’m not blushing,’ before continuing with the interview.”

The Charlotte Observer carried an Associated Press report on the incident.

“Chris Gayle’s comments to a female reporter during an interview broadcast live on Australian television have been criticised by the head of the Big Bash League,” the story said.

“The comments drew heavy criticism on social media and were described by Anthony Everard, head of the BBL, as ’disrespectful and simply inappropriate’.”
